Hey everybody, I'm Bobbie Gorman, but known as Miss Bobbie - I'm a professional clown, community education instructor at our local community college, and kid's pastor who is just learning to raise some chickens. I've had them about 3 weeks and I'm beyond addicted. Who knew these birds were so beautiful and gentle and fun and and and....(but yall already know).

I've read several threads and everything I can get my hands on up to this point. It was time to start talking because I had some specific questions (like, what kind of chickens are there, I posted in the what kind of chickens are these thread lol)

I'm loving every minute of these little gals (i hope they're gals anyway), and ready to get more (although hubby says 7 is plenty this year, especially since we already had 2 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, 5 fish, and a cat).

I've been successful with my other animals and my self-sustaining garden, so chickens were the next on the list. Once my hubby and I get moved out to our own place in the country, I want to add a couple of goats, a cow, and a hive or 3 of bees.

Born and raised a city girl, this country life is suiting me quite nicely now!!!

Looking forward to talking chicken with anyone and everyone who has some free time -- i might need to peck, i mean pick your brains!!!

Hello Bobbie and welcome to BYC!

Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

Thank you everyone for your kind welcome, but thank you even more for these forums.

A day or two after I posted, my husband finished our outdoor chicken run (the babies have been in a LARGE rabbit cage in the house up to that point). The chicken wire we used had kind of large rectangles instead of smaller doomahitchies -- one of the babies got out after we put her in, so we took the two smallest birds and put them back in the cage the first night.

The next morning, the third smallest apparently also fit through the wire and was attacked by a neighborhood dog. She had 4 bite marks and it appeared her wing and leg were broken. I ran to the forums and found the dog attack threads, but sadly it appeared most of the information and her outlook wasn't positive, she's very young and small.

Well, after doing much research, I decided to treat her naturally, and I'm happy to report - six days later (today) -- her feathers have grown back in, she is up and running around the "hospital" (she's back in the rabbit cage alone, the other two gained plenty of weight being away from the others). She still has a limp, and i can move her feathers and see some of the damage still there, but she's recovering nicely. I decided to not go to antibiotic route (my people family doesn't do antibiotics, so i didn't want to give my chicken family any either). I treated her with fresh herbs out of the garden, hard boiled eggs, cayenne pepper, essential oils, and lots of rest and love.

shortly after the attack - -she slept for two solid days, barely waking up for anything, i fed her water in the lid of a water bottle and kind of dunked her beak into it until she'd swallow -- she only ate food out of my hand those first few days

the worst dog bite was here on her back side above her leg (kinda to the right of her vent), not sure if she'll ever be able to lay eggs or not, but that doesnt matter now - she's my sweet baby girl

the view from the top - the dog got her right wing (when looking from this direction), under her let wing, on her rump (pic above) and on top of her right leg

she started hugging me on the third day after the attack

this is her today - six days after the attack - back up and being a sweet chicken - she makes kind of a "purring" sound when i come around - she knows i walked that walk with her

i'm still giving her a little bit of hard boiled egg, to make sure she continues to strengthen

my beautiful Buttercup baby girl!!!
