Definitely do not need a heat lamp for adult chickens (really, chickens above about 6 weeks old) - just need a brooding plan. If this is your first coop I recommend whatever you design
- be able to brood in the coop. This is simply a waterer, feeder, heat pad (Mama Heat Pad)
- be able to separate space for 1/3rd of your number of chickens worth of chicks. In other words, for your flock, 3x3 space or so, in which you can brood day old chicks until they are 2-3 weeks old and integrate into your flock, to replace aging laying hens each spring (eat 1/3rd of hens in October, add back same number in April)
my set up involves a “extension” that is usually wide open to the coop but I block it off for brooding april-May. Mama heat pad good to 20s F which is fine for you.
where in NJ? Looks beautiful, I grew up off Exit 2 in Mullica hill.
