I know what it looks like, I know how to remove it, and I know how to medicate the area. What I don't know is what causes it in otherwise healthy chicks and what to do to prevent it from recurring or happening in the first place. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The one thing I know that definitely causes it is stress from shipping. They usually outgrow it in a week or so.

Jkirby, as i read on here, i started soaking pasty butts lol and applying olive oil, were now over the pasty butt but if i can figure out how to keep the feathered footers from being gunked up....i think ive got raising chics whipped

Thanks everyone for the replies. The chicks that are having this problem are a little over a week old. I've been removing it and all that stuff, but was just trying to find out if it's a dietary problem or something that vitamins or other additives might take care of in future chicks.
