I think it's the old nesting instinct gone just a tiny bit haywire.

Probably chicken ancestors (think dinosaurs) covered themselves with grass and other debris in order to brood their eggs.
 
porteryork, Please let us know if Rosie shows up. I've read many times of missing chickens and they seem to usually show up. I lost one for just a day, but she was brooding in a nest she had made out in the pasture. I know it's scary, good luck.

I always thought it was a camouflage instinct. When they brood they are extra vulnerable. The xtra covering makes them blend right in.
