So, I have lots of chickens and ducks. Mostly bantams, but a few large fowl too.
I have two seramas inside now, one had a respiratory infection, the other seems to have some frostbite on one foot, and her vent was clogged. They are healing up nicely inside, until the weather breaks. The first one, Peaches, with the respiratory issue, is all healed up, loves to come out of the cage, dust bathes on my lap, etc.

So I've been thinking once they go back outside with their flock, I'd like to have some caged birds to keep inside.

Parakeets are fairly plentiful in my area, and seem like a decent fit for me. I love the look and size of doves, but don't know enough about them. Love the little finches too, but from what I've seen so far in my research, they don't look like a good fit for me...

So I'm looking for options, suggestions, etc, so I know what to search for.

-Small, no huge birds.
-Noisy is ok, but prefer not overly so.
-Handleable, sit on my shoulder, etc.
-Not too needy, I work away from home, and am gone many weekends. Otherwise I give lots of attention.
-Flight capable, but not so flighty as to not be able to catch. I have 2 small indoor dogs that don't mess with my chickens, but will have to be trained with small birds.

Any other useful info you would like to share would be appreciated, as i go through the other threads here.

I suggest that you start your search by going to a pet store and LISTENING to the different types of birds. While you say you don't mind the noise of an indoor bird, there is a HUGE difference between the screech of a parrot, and the chirping of a parakeet. I find finches, at least the ones I am familiar with to be monotonous in their voice quality. A male canary is a joy to listen to, female... not so much. If you want "handleable" I suggest a single male parakeet. They can learn to talk with limited vocabulary. My sister had a female parakeet who talked a blue streak. she'd string sentences together, and even came up with her own words!

IMO, parrots are more needy than parakeets.

I've been down the indoor bird route, and will never travel that path again b/c of the dander and the mess they make. I'm not keen about having poop and seeds flung on my walls, and my lungs can't take the dander.

Thanks. Those are good points.

This all started because I went to the pet store to get a cuttlebone for the serama that is inside. She started laying and her second egg was soft.

I got roped in by the bird cages. :D

If you can find hand reared bourkes parakeets they are very tidy house guests (very little dander too) and have an absolutely beautiful song. Even young ones can be won over with a bit of effort if not hand reared. They also don't chew which is a big plus and they aren't needy when it comes to attention/affection. Their active times are dawn and dusk so they are a good fit for people who work.

Cockatiels are sweet and affectionate but they do like to spread their seed around and need about two hours of your time daily to be really happy (but they are happy to ride round on your shoulder so it's not difficult to give them attention). They do need things to chew on.

I have Java finches and Bengalese/Society finches. I love them and both have a lovely song (especially the male Javas) but they are messy birds who love to bathe in their water (as soon as you change it)!

Hi there, I agree that you should listen to the birds in the pet store first before buying. I am a bird breeder and all my birds are kept outdoors so I'm not sure about how much mess they would make sorry.

I've kept several budgies over the years. Great birds, very easy to care for and pretty hardy. They tame well if you spend a lot of time with them but I'd still recommend getting two since they go a bit neurotic if left alone much.

I had one around 2005-ish that would imitate the microwave beeping. Another would sit on my finger and chat with me.

Ended up getting 3 budgies last weekend. They are a hoot! I'm already making toys for them. They are very young, 6-8 weeks. Enjoying them alot already.

They are so pretty and budgies are always so cheerful. They are young! Just make sure they are all eating well. Congrats on your new birdies. Watch out, because it's not just chickens that are addictive!

If you have chickens that are diseased I wouldn't get house birds then as they can get the diseases chickens carry killing them
