Answer to the Delaware Dilemma

Yes, he did sell off the Dels. Give him a call, chickens are his business.

Do you mind if I let him know you referred me to him?
I don't want to seem like some crazy who just came out of the blue.

I'll be sure to report back with what Duane has to say!

Sure, use my name. I'm not sure that will help convince him you are sane though.

I think he has his doubts about me.

Is the whole world reading this thread? hahahaha maybe I better start posting smarter answers. That was a free add, he pays lots of money for the ones in Poultry Press etc.
He does request that you call between 6pm and 9pm CST. and it is best to keep the conversation to whatever business you have. He is a very busy man. He has been pulloriom clean since 1957.

Okay, maybe not the WHOLE world...but we do have about 60,000+ members

Oh wait...Walt, you're a GENIUS! Hit him up for another $1,000.00 to add to the $1,000.00 you already have from the bounty on Beth's head!! Tell him it is an advance for your marketting his birds for him. Maybe you could convince him that is an annual fee while you're on a roll here

Cindyloo! You are positively diabolical woman!

I like that about you!

Thanks Walt. I have just one hatchery Buff Orp left of my original flock of 6 BO and 6 GSL. She has always been such a lovely girl, sweet and gentle, despite having a name like FussyButt. I'd love to have more BO's in the future. Anyone in particular you could recommend for hatching eggs? I remember you mentioning that some of the best Del's are coming more from the East coast, rather than out west here. Do you find this to be true with BO's as well? You're definitely right about choice of breeds being a personal one. I like Orps, in any color, and I surely have a soft spot for the buffs, but oh those Dellies!!! I definitely want a nice little flock of those to grace my yard some day!!

There are not many black Orps here on the west coast, but there are some good buff Orps. Most of the people I know with them don't sell eggs or chicks though. Just grown birds. I can look around when you are ready. I think most people are done hatching for a while now.

Serrin..I just gave away my 4 POL Buff Orps yesterday to another local BYC'er. I have raised up some Del/Buff Orp crosses for my mom a layer flock. They are such sweet birds! I love the little crosses we have out there...mom will be lucky if she gets them all

This picture is a very good example of deep and not so deep as it relates to the body. It takes people a while to get the "eye". Another strange thing that happens is that we don't see faults in our own birds. That includes me. It is called many things, "barn blindness" is one of the terms. I once had a very good breeder ask why his bird (a Sebright) didn't do well in a show. I said "cuz it is knock kneed Bill". Serious fault! Actually a DQ. This man wrote a book on Sebrights!

w.

LOL, Learned that when I was a kid showing horses..And barn blind they were..If somebody tells me watch this or that.Boy I do..Im sort of the opposite, I tend to go overboard finding fault with my flock, for instance, Im heading out tommorrow at 6 AM to twin tiers poultry show in bath ny..And I tell everybody that Im heading to the gun fight with a knife, hee hee, cause its the truth...I took some extra cloths just in case I won aything at all cause if I did I would crap. But the wineries are right next door , I wont go drown my sorrows (just to the gift shop christmads shopping)) cause Im planning to have a great time and brnig home some new chickens..reason to celebrate. Maybe a few dels...depends..

maybe it was the early horse training not to be barn blind. I want to one day be the best and if being the best means making changes then changes it is.. I do need somone to help me time to time, but have an APA judge for a neighbor, so that works out well...First thing he said to me was What the ((blank)) did you get those things for? Now hows that for constructive critisism..He thinks I need a fancy little bantam..I am stubborn about sticking with this..He did get me a ..I think they were a fad...giant australorps..I think its a blk buff orp...And My rooster is terrified and I mean terrified of her...Jeeees

This picture doesnt do her justice, shes the size of a turkey. So giant australorp? buff orps? she has what we call jurrassic feet.

Mercy, Aveca, those feet!!!!! But what a pretty bird.

I picked up a bunch of my pullets today and tipped them forward. I got HUGE, wide black triangles. I didn't realize they had that many black feathers squinched up in there. I spent a lot of time looking DOWN on them, and saw where I have a few with the segmented, or wasp shape, and several that are smooth ovals in shape. The heavier girls are more oval, BTW.

I also noticed they showed more tail black earlier in the summer than they do now, but the white feathers covering the black ones look fuzzy - like they are going to molt out.

BTW- if any of you got an email from my hotmail address today with an attachment- DON"T OPEN IT!!
I came home and found all this weird stuff in my email - returns from the postal thingie with something that I did NOT send out!!!

Lynnie, is that feathered feet I'm seeing on your girl, or is she just that fluffy and maybe hunkered down a little bit? My goodness! What feet indeed! You should put her to work squishing grapes for wine!

I'll be awhile yet before I'm ready to expand the flock Walt. I got a little carried away with myself this last winter and hatched out 18 mixed mutts on my first time ever incubating. Went from a measly little flock of nine girls and one mean rooster to just shy of 30 in the blink of an eye! We're back down to a more reasonable figure of 22 birds total now. I'm hoping, come next spring, that I'll be able to add another 5-10. I know that's not even a drop in the bucket to someone who has over 500 birds, but for us, it's considerable.

You wouldn't happen to have pictures of your facility, would you Walt? Both today and what things were like when you had over 1,400?? I bet that was a sight to behold!

You surely must have had staff to help you with that many birds. How does one single handedly care for over 1,400 birds? It takes me over an hour every day just to stay on top of eggs, poop and feeding of 22 hooligans! I just can't imagine taking care of that many all by myself!
