My neighbor puts antibiotic in her chickens water once a month, but the chickens aren't sick. I think this is wrong. do you have any information I could print out to give her to show her this is harmful? She doesn't have a computer or internet. It needs to be something other than an opinion, if you know what I mean. Please get back to me asap !

Hey guys! New to chickens and trying to figure out what is going on with my 10 week old Dominique Rooster. He has been withdrawn and sleeping a lot. Barely coming out of the coop to drink and maybe is eating a little. This is day 2 and I just noticed watery diarrhea from him. I have polyvisol w/out iron in the water and just put a seperate waterer with probiotics in there too. Should I treat with antibiotics? If so what kind? I am paranoid of Mareks because last week I lost a bantam because of weird neck and leg spams/paralysis. Not sure where I would have picked it up since all my birds are the same age and I've had them since they were a day old. Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to BYC. It always keeps down confusion if you go up to the top of this page and start a new thread. Mareks can always be a problem if the chicks aren't vaccinated, since Mareks can be in your environment. But at this age, I would first be cincerned with it being possible coccidiosis. The symptoms are lethargy, weakness, hunched or puffed up posture, diarrhea or blood in stools, and not eating. Corid or amprollium should be given in the water for 5 days for treatment. Mareks disease can cause a lack of immunity to common diseases. If you lose another chick, I would get a necropsy done by your state vet or vet college.

I don't usually treat wounds like that with oral antibiotics, I just keep them clean and out the neosporin on them.

Hi. Would you use antibiotics to treat for this type of condition? Or just neosporin. First two pics is before bath, second pic is after. Don't know what to do. Please help

What's wrong with giving tetracycline? I brought some new hens in and didn't properly quarantine, so didn't realize they were sick. Now I have several with respiratory problems, not eating, not drinking (way too hot for that) lethargic and they have poopy butt, watery stools. I have been adding tetra to their food along with yogurt and putting apple cider with the mother in the water. Showing signs of improvement, but it's so hot that complicates their recovery. My question is - Are the eggs safe to eat? If not, how long do I need to wait?

Chlortetracycline

Chlortetracycline is approved for laying hens in both Australia and Ireland. In Australia, chlortetracycline
is labeled for use in the drinking water of chickens up to 60 mg/kg/bw for up to 5 days with a zero day
egg discard period. In Ireland, there is a medicated feed containing chlortetracycline to be fed to layers
at a dose of 20 to 25 mg/kg bodyweight for 5-7 days with a 4 day egg discard. Since there is not a
tolerance for chlortetracycline in eggs in the US, the withdrawal interval for any eggs undergoing
regulatory inspection would need to be extended to allow residues to deplete to a level below detection.

Oxytetracycline

There are many papers looking at egg residues from oxytetracycline treated hens. Oxytetracycline is
approved for laying hens in Canada. Soluble powders labelled for use in the drinking water at doses
of 190mg/gallon to 424 mg/gallon have a 60 hour to 5 day egg withdrawal respectively. Since there
is no tolerance for oxytetracycline in eggs in the US, a longer withdrawal interval than Canada’s
recommendation would need to be observed for extra label drug use of oxytetracycline in laying hens.
