We use AMDRO for ants, they take the stuff home and everyone dies. We have a few areas in the yard around the coop we have made small enclosers the hens/chicks can not get to and it is here we place the bait. Ants are gone in a few days....

You never mentioned what kind of ants? surely not fireants, sugar ants, or crazy ants or what? I used to live in ft myers and if they are fireants you better get and feed them amdro (where the chickens can't eat it) those things will kill peeps
All you can do is reduce the population - why aren't your chickens eating them???

I wish chickens would eat ants. I have been fighting them all year so far as well. I have used a lot of DE and Sevin dust to try to help keep the population in check. I don't like pesticides since I do have dogs that like to roam my yard but I am about the completely treat the yard. My girls will just have to stay in their run area. Anyone have any idea how long pesticide will reside in the grass?

To answer someone question about what kind of ants I have. I can tell you they are not fire ants. As I understand.. fire ants make huge dirt mounds and I have had those in my front yard. But all over the rest of my 2 1/2 acres I have these ants that are everywhere. They BITE bad. In my chicken yard they are really bad too. SO bad that the chickens stay up on their little perches so they don't have to get on the ground. I have put down Selvin dust and it has helped some. I have sprayed with Selvin spray and it helps some too. I just know that these ants are vicious little buggers and they are getting on my last nerve and my little chickens are getting tired of stomping. They do try to eat some of them but this is getting ridicious. I am going to see if I can find some of the DE or fossil shell flour or whatever its called. I'll try a ANT EATER if I could find one.

Are they legal to have in Georgia???????? At this rate I have spent $$$$$$ on pesticides and poultry dust. I have even thought about moving the whole works some where else, but the ants are even bad in the garden. Can't even pick peas for them. They are on the grape vines as well. Whew..... Well we will see what happens in the next few days. I am going to ck with my feed and seed place and see what we can do. Thanks everybody. Will let you know what happens.

Dont waste money on DE..it will not work... trust me. I live up north and it didnt even help with my ants up here. And i tried 2 bags worth...
Spend the money on chemicals...DE is a joke. IMO

Agree. DE is worthless for ants. The chickens will only eat them if they have the white termite looking baby ants crawling around.

Amdro or Maxforce work great as a bait. But the chickens will eat it. When I find a mound, I treat it and cover with a bucket for a few days. Kills the whole colony.

If you have a few mounds, they are probably all fire ants as they do travel a long distance from the mound foraging. Sugar ants don't really bite and red ants have a minimal sting when they bite.
