Ants eating chickens alive!!

> I've spend a lot of money on ant killers

This looks the problem to me.

You are poisoning the ants, chicken are eating killed ants and being poisoned subchronically, that could make them to became letargic, that will let them vulnerable to the ants.

Unless you have a specially nasty type of ants. Healthy chicken would simply eat the ants as snack. Are we talking about fire ants? bullet ants? tropical ones?

Add bath dust, so the chicken can scratch themselves. Stop poisoning your animals. Move the incubating chicks to a safe place and lock all the chicken food that is not being used

Hum, just realized now that this post is super-old...

I was told GRITS. The ants love it & take it back to the nest, they eat it & supposedly swell up & die, but not supposed to hurt chickens & can be used around/in garden.
It has to be raw grits, not the instant kind. It works well! Just sprinkle it where you see them. It doesn't have to be a lot. They will gather it all. I used to have ants around my house and in the garden. Haven't seen any in a couple years

We have these huge red ant colonies here in Texas and DE does NOT work! It slows them down for a few days but they pretty much laugh at it. But they laugh even harder at the "grits" or "corn meal" suggestion. Read up on what ants eat - it's fungus off the rotting items they pull down their holes. They don't eat the stuff they carry. Unfortunately, even the Amdro poison I've tried isn't terrible effective, and it's definitely not organic.

DE and organic stuff may work for some of those weaker northern species of ants; but I've yet to find one that works down here in the brush country.

Never heard of them eating a live chicken, though.

I have used Amdro and have very good luck with it. Killed fire ants as well as carpenter ants with it. Just sprinkle about a teaspoon of it near their colony and they will take it down inside and share with everyone there, including the queen.
It however is not instant. It takes about 3 to 4 days to work.
