Good for you!
Hope roo isn't TOO stubborn! Had a Muscovy drake that just wouldn't back down & tore my pant leg open. They have big nasty looking talons! Well, he made the best roast ever!
I might just let him fight with my welly then when hes tired give him a good boot and that should do it!

I recently had to "get rid of " an aggressive RIR rooster. I have a black wyandotte rooster who is the sweetest thing.. he is older and not aggressive at all toward me or the hens. The RIR on the other hand was just plain mean. I had to carry a "rooster stick" with me when I went outside. He would never come after me if I was facing him, but every time I turned my back, here he came. I would pop him with the stick, stamp my foot, boot him.. even sprayed him with the water hose a few times while i was filling up watering containers and he decided to come after me. He would stop for a few days, but then he always did it again. It got so bad that my poor little weenie dog couldnt go outside without me with her because he would attack her. He would literally see her from across the yard and take off in a full sprint just to attack her. I have a 3 year old daughter who was terrified of him, so he had to go. If you decide to keep yours, NEVER ignore his bad behavior. Teach him who is boss.

Sorry you had to get rid of him. I hope i dont have to because people dont want cockerels anyways so no one will want an agressive one, so i would have to get someone to dispose of him which i really dont want to do! Hope he calms down. Its just so sad after having him from a chick :/

It's tough for sure. My hubby has a hard time with it. I try to think of it as a necessary job, a task that needs to be done. Behaviour could worsen the longer you wait. My hope is that if you keep on him, he will soon understand who's boss, and will mellow out. My first RIR rooster was very good after. Once caught for exams, he settled right down & let me inspect him. It might help if you make frequent trips to their area to reinforce your dominance. That just might tire him out & make him give up his aggression towards you.

Now hes agressive to me does that mean he will be good at protcting the hens form predetors??

Maybe, maybe not. Some roos are just jerks. Like my 2 bad boys. I currently have the Cuckoo Marans roo, who is very nice to the girls, but is also very protective. He also knows his place with regards to me. Every bird is an individual. I guess you can't really tell for certain until the opportunity presents itself. I have to say though, a lot of folks on this forum don't have the patience to keep fighting with a nasty roo & will just cull them. Likewise, I find it unacceptable. There are great roos out there that will do justice for the flock & their caretakers.

i've been really blessed w/ the perfect rooster. i was so worried from the start, but not a single incident. i think it's a large part due to the breed. mine is a black australorp. he's very big, so he has to have big girls if you know what i mean. he's super protective - even tangled with a hawk once to save his girls.
i can tell he's thought about coming at me a few times - just the way he looks at me from the side. he's so big, i would have problems. my philosophy in handling him is to treat him like he's nothing special from the beginning. i've never treated him like a pet. if he tries to mount one of his girls when i'm near, i push him off with my foot. i NEVER walk around him. i make him move out of my way sometimes even when that's not the way i intended to go
in other words, i act like a dominant animal around him. i'm not trying to be a chicken - just the boss.

when i have my next rooster experience, i sure hope it works out as well as this one has. i'm a huge fan of the heavy breeds & they tend to be more mellow to humans from what i've read.

I dont know why hes protective over mine, NONE of them apart from his mother and sister like him, they all love the old guy which i dont blame them for!!
