i start un febuary club meets every monday night for dogs. is anyone in a lyon county club

In Michigan, 4-H starts back up in September, with club registrations due in Oct/Nov. New members can sign up until May 1st...the deadline to be able to go to the fair.

We have a wide range of clubs with different project areas. Some just crafts and other non-animal stuff, horse clubs, dog clubs, shooting sports clubs, market livestock clubs, small animal clubs, etc.

New this year we had a cat show. Yes there is a cat showmanship the kids have to inspect their cats and explain what the are doing and looking for. Example: checking the ears for ear mites.

In Michigan regular 4-H members have to be 9 on Janurary 1st to show animals and compete against others. We also have a 5-8 year old division called 'cloverbuds', these kids can take non-animal stuff and everyone gets a blue ribbon. One of the goals is to get the kids to talk about their projects to a judge. The 8 year olds can participate in the cloverbud mentor program, where they are paired up with a teen who has been in that project area for 2 years. The cloverbud goes to their farm and learns showmanship, care and parts of the animal. Then on Thursday of our fair they do an exhibition show with the other cloverbuds. It is a great experience for the cloverbuds and mentors. All species are offered except dairy, beef, and swine.

Thanks so much! I will call the OSU extension office. I believe they are the ones that are in charge of it. I have been to the website, and cannot find start-up info on it. Either I'm looking in the wrong place, or it's not there.

I am the small animal leader in our club. Not sure if sign up times vary by state or county, but here it is March 1st. Our club starts meetings in August and they stop registrations in January. My kids show or have shown dogs, poultry, rabbits, goats & llamas.

4-H is an excellent program and encourages kids to be leaders, involved in the community, etc. It is not just a country kid thing, their all all sorts of crafts, flowers, veggies, cooking, baking, sewing, shooting sports, quilting, writing, photography, singing, dancing, music, engines, collections, calligraphy, vet science, etc. Then of course, all the animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, llamas and more.

There are lots of things for kids to do that live in the city, not just country kids. Most can have guinea pigs, dogs and cats, some rabbits, and chickens in the city. Some programs allow the kids to lease or borrow animals from others. Some of my 4-H kids live in the city and use some of our animals. During the 4-H season they help pay for feed, come out and do chores, learn how to care for them and show them.
