Any Bee Keepers out there?

I have my hives on cinder blocks..and also pallets. Yes ants can be a problem...cinnamon like reccomended by Rein is a good way and ant traps placed around are helpful. But that is just another hastle I let go unless it becomes really bad. But if your hive is cealed pretty well and hive has enough stores and is healthy it would take a lot of ants to ruin the hive. But better be safe than sorry.

Does anyone ever have any problems with bears? We will be getting our Bees in a few months and I'm not sure if I should set up an electric fence as a preventative or wait until it becomes an issue. We had a bear pass through the property last fall, but since this is only our second year here I'm not sure if he is a permanent resident or not.

Electric fence around two of my hives. We have a lot of black bear...and a good way to teach them not to go near the hives is hanging bacon on the strands of wire. They will come up to eat it and get shocked.

I REALLY want bees but have been having a hard time figuring out a place to put some. We have a hundred acres but most is in production (soybeans). How far from the highway and how far from the bean field do the hives need to be?

Mandy, first off do you guys spray the beans with any herbicide or pesticide? And you only really need a small area to have the hives. How many are you planning on having? They can be right by the house...or out in the back or front yard. Or wherever you want. A low traffic area is best though and a place that gets plenty of sun!
