My new DIY knife. A replica of Ray mears bushcraft knife.1095 steel, Micarta handel and mosaic pins.

I made my first the weekend before from a 5" piece of farrier rasp. My buddy wanted me to sand it more and polish it. I said its going to be a working skinning knife. I only sanded the bevel to polish that and has not hit a wet stone yet and its sharp enough to skin now.

Right from the forge and quenching. This was the rough side and its still got some of the file depressions in it.

I used it to cut the leather for the sheath.

Did you heat treated it? Rasps have hige carbon steel but they are brittle. They need tampering.
Tung oil is a very good choice as a wood finish, but you have to have the knowledge how to implement it.
 
Yesterday I finished the sheath for my new buscraft knife, I went crazy with the colors, but I love it! :lol:
The little red thing is a place for a fire rod.

Yes, 2 hours at 400. This was before re-sanding. I cut the leather for the seath but I have too many projects, with hunting and canning season and processing our own.

I used to make primitive bow and tung oil was the bow finish I choose. Lots of coats.
