I have 4 EEs I bought from Murry Mcmurray hatchery. Just wondering if anyone has any guesses to what they will look like as adults. Also, at what age will they show their final colors? Pictures to follow.

So, they will change a bit with watch molt too. So, a light, white, brown or grey EE will still remain that basic color, but often will change a bit. A full adult molt happens usually after the first winter/second spring…but each bird is different, so could happen earlier.

we have had MANY EE over the past few years. We usually request some general color from the hatchery, for example, “we want brown EE chicks”, “we want Grey EE chicks”. The grey batch all turned out quite similar, out of 6 female chicks. The brown ones were REALLY different, but all dark overall. This year we asked for generally lighter ones, and they do vary between them, but all of the 6 are a mix of white, gold, light grey-some are stunning! Our oldest EE, age 3.5 years old, have changed somewhat with molts. What I love about molts is the beard snd muffs are amazingly fluffy after a molt!

Ooooh those sound pretty! I didn't know you could request like that - if I ever order any again, I will try that!

My kid shows in county 4H. So one category she shows in are “pen of 2, egglayers”. They are either both “young” ( under a year) or “old” (over a year). Breeds need to look the SAME (for example 2 buff Orpington need to look as identical as possible, and that is part of the judging criteria), but 2 EE do not need to look the same in feathering, but they DO need to look the same in size and shape. So we buy 6 each year so we have choices, and requesting general colors helps us remember how old they are!

Do you think the 2 lighter chicks I got will look very different from the 2 darker ones?
I think you will have variation. Still too much fluff to say. Our dark batch were interesting, a couple had black centers to their feathers and one had feathers on the head/neck that looked like they were brushed back bc of how they were oriented. Yours do not have head feathers yet. Sometimes there a variations to how much fluff they have in their beard snd muffs.
