This was our mystery chick with our last order. They are about 7 weeks old now and this one is a bit behind the others in size. Any ideas what it is. We seem to have gotten lucky and it would appear to be a pullet. I apologize for the photos. I have tremors and a clear photo is a rarity for me :-)

If that is what it is called. I am blanking. It is not a pea or rose comb. Just a traditional RIR type.

When it hatched was it black with a white dot on its head? If so then I would think barred rock. At least that is what it looks like to me but I am no expert by any means.

It didn't have the white spot, no. We have plenty of Barred Rocks and this one doesn't look like any of them did. Its confirmation is a bit different too. Almost lanky, if you can describe a chicken that way :-)

Could it be a Cuckoo Maran??? They have a resemblance to Barred Rocks.

I have never had any Cuckoo Marans but looked them up and it sure does look like what you have. According to Ideal's website the chick would have been mostly black with a little white here and there. Does that sound like what it looked like as a chick?

It does. It was pretty non-descript grey and white. I have just read that you can get some CM's with barred rock in their lines when you get them from the big hatcheries.
