Any hikers, backpackers or climbers?

i plan on doing some hiking this year, but am not a climber (no mountains near me or in my province)

but for hiking the only issue is most the places i plan on going are in bear country. and i have a fear of bears...

but i found this awesome stream last year and plan on maybe doing some hiking along it for fishing.
Bears here too. I'm not real quiet, on purpose. And my dog goes with me everywhere, she's off leash about 15 feet in front of me and is very alert and not real brave. She alerts pretty dramatically and I pay attention to what she says with her ears. If she gets behind me and I don't have good visibility ahead I divert.

When I wasn't this old :old as I am today,.....I once hiked the Appalachian Trail from northern Tennessee to Harrisburg Pennsylvania. I hiked with a girlfriend, we had a blast! We were in no rush and even stopped in some towns along the way to sightsee. I can't remember exactly how long it took us to hike this distance, but we must have been out there a couple months. I have very fond memories of this trail.

We have a real AT hiker amongst us! I read trail journal blogs every summer, green with envy. My family responsibilities will never allow me to be gone that long. Plus I'm honestly likely a bit past that physically also. But I can still dream!

You must really cherish those days. How wonderful to have that.

I was about 22 yrs old and my girlfriend and I decided to spend one last summer together before we both went off in different directions in life. We trained for a year before we left, bought all kinds of lightweight gear, equipment, yeah, we had a ton of fun. Day hikes are more my speed now. :)

We walked through quite a bit of rain. Lots of blisters come from wet boots! We were young. We got used to being wet but yes, sunny dry days were fabulous!

No time like the present. ;)
That's a good point. But I don't foresee a time that I'll be un needed long enough. I have been blessed with a couple 4 day vacations over the last few years but can't envision longer. I have extra dependent kids. For now I'm having a having a blast with all these chickens, mini webbers in the bator, summer might come soon. That'll have to do.:)

Another reason a person needs to do crazy stuff like hike long trails when they are young...we accumulate so many responsibilities as we age, we can't get away!! I don't know who could take care of this zoo I've got going over here if I were to leave. We haven't had a vacation in decades!! :barnie:p
