Any Home Bakers Here?

1. Get a Basket, a bag works too but I find a basket is better. Just one of those plastic ones you'd get french fries in, in a drive in or at a cheap diner.
2. Get straw, rice straw works, there are many local farms and places where you can get it at, NOT hay, it IS different, but straw.
3. Get Oyster Mushroom Culture, easily found online
4. Sterilize the Straw by Boiling for about 20 minutes.
5. Get a 2 or 3 gallon zip lock I find works best plastic bag.
6. Put Sterilized Straw in Basket after you shook some of the water out of it, it does not have to be bone dry, some moisture is good but not sopping wet.
7. Put Mushroom Culture in straw.
6/7 a. The culture is like chicken crumbles, layer it in the straw, ie blanket of straw, sprinkle culture, another layer of straw, another layer of culture, do this for about 3 layers.
8. Put it all in the zip lock bag, and zip it up.
9. Put in a dark and cool place, an interior closet works.
10, Check in a few weeks, the straw should have white growth through it, (ok we all know what moldy stuff looks like, the celium, almost looks like mold growing through the straw)
11. about once a week after, look for pips, ie little flower bud looking, these are the baby mushrooms. once it pips, place in better light, it needs light NOT DIRECT SUNLIGHT. I put mine in my bedroom so it gets light that comes through the window during the day, a bit warmer temperature too.
12. Once the buds start to actually grow, could be a day or two or another week, cut a slit in the bag for them to grow through and propogate.
13, Once the flowers are at their maturity, the are well flushed and not wilting / browning too badly on the tips, just gently snip them off, and cook as you like !!
14. once the bloom is done, put the shrooms back into a new CLOSED bag, you can reuse the tore one again if you desire but best to use a new one that way you dont worry about contamination.
15. Put back into the dark closet and wait for next bloom. They tend to go with temperature / season changes and you can get 3 sometimes 4 blooms before it's time to change out the straw, innoculate a new batch.

I'll see what I can do to get some pictures and stuff posted, but warn you now, I can get bad at that kind of thing and forgetful. ill try not to let the CRS get me though :)

If any of you are in the Jacksonville Florida area, there is a non profit, really great guy, who does all this natural stuff and he actually has a class to show you exactly how to do this, and make logs too, to throw in your yard.
he has a facebook page, and other forms of contact.
Look up Eat Your Yard Jacksonville, or EatYourYardJax to get more info.

Disclaimer: I met the man maybe 6 months ago and like what he is doing, I have ZERO financial interests in his operations and get no kickbacks etc etc, in case anyone is wondering. His name is Tim Armstrong in case you wish to reach out.

Thank you so much for the blow by blow on how to do.

Interview went well, I think. I would be making a little less than my last job even though this would be a higher ranking job. More difficult work, with higher stress for less pay is not cool. I was stoked when I walked out of there, but my enthusiasm for the job is cooling off, lol.
Plus, I hate the thought of going back to 5 days vacation per year. DH gets 5+ WEEKS of PTO each year.

By the time I got home after the interview and shopping in town, I was tired. But, I got 20 broiler chicks in Tues morning before the interview so I spent the evening getting them settled in. Then yesterday I got to spend most of the day with family at the local nature center, then lunch and lots of laughs. My niece brought her 1 year old. For a kid who has met maybe 12 people in his life so far, he did pretty good with 3 new scary faces hanging out with him for 4 hours. My favorite quote for the day was when my niece said to her son "Here, play with your knife". We were dining outside and sitting at a patio table, the kid was enjoying sticking the butter knife down into the openings in the table top.

Woke up this morning - the fridge is dead. Everything in the freezer is completely defrosted and has to be thrown out. That means all my leftover mini-meatloaves, chicken enchiladas, taco meat, sloppy joes and diced chicken that I had for quick meals is headed for the garbage. :hit

Sound like "some things" are NOT going well???
Why accept a job like that? You should get what you want. Life is short and working should be WHAT IS FAIR. Think about it. Expect more for your services. You are worth it. Aria

Glad you got to spend some time with your family and sorry about the fridge (and maybe the job). Sounds like a real mix of ups & downs.
