Any Home Bakers Here?

I bet you’ve all been wondering where I’ve been. Well, I’ve been having some depression issues the past week. Haven’t had much of an opportunity to post because of it. I’m doing better now.

I’m just planning out my garden. I decided to plant some grapevines and fruit trees.
I'm glad you are doing better now.
What kinds of fruit trees are you planting? And grapes? I had good luck with catawba red grapes at my last farm, but so far no grapes are liking my environment here. The soil is very different.

Sounds GREAT. We planted An APPLE ORCHARD years ago. We got a lots of apples. Made apple cider enjoyed the apples for MANY years. Now with Floyd gone the orchard is pretty to watch grow and the deer enjoy the apples. Good Luck...they are fun to grow.
I agree...fruit trees are a joy!

Loved my little orchard at my last farm. I had about 25 trees....apples, peaches, pears, and a few plum trees. All the smaller fruits too and I loved all the blooms in the spring and picking the fruits later in the season.
So much goodness to eat, can, and make jams and spreads with. Didn't have a cider press, but I could sure make a mean old fashioned apple butter. It was one of my signature gifts during the holidays and everyone always asked for more.

I dunno what I’m gonna do today. Maybe nuthin’. My dad used to say that doing nuthin’ was hard work ‘cause ya can’t stop to rest.

My sourdough rye turned out beautiful….and tasty….so now I’m more comfortable doing the refrigerator bit if I can’t bake the bread “on schedule”. I was almost panicked when I realized after making the dough that I wasn’t going to be able to finish the shaping and such and baking it the next morning. I’m glad that working with sourdough is pretty forgiving.

I may go ahead and make an easy beef pot pie for tonight. I think the meat will be tender enough for Ken to chew and if it’s not he can pick it out and set it to the side. I love making this particular pot pie….just make up the filling and then put on the puff pastry top. I use my small Dutch oven, and put the lid on it upside down to finish cooking the pie in the oven. But I put the puff pastry on the inside of the lid on parchment paper of the Dutch oven as the filling cooks. When it’s done, I pop the baked puff pastry on top of the filling. I remember talking about this here once before and just now remembered that someone asked about cutting the parchment paper. I forgot to respond, but here’s the link to the recipe. I make my own filling, though. I don’t follow his recipe for the filling. But this works with any pot pie.

I've been missing you, Jared! Glad you're back.

We have several wild apple trees on our property, and we've planted a few cultivated ones. We also have 2 Montmorency sour cherries that I hope will do well. We have to protect the little trees from deer and mice. And the blossoms from frost, most years.

I look at fruit trees as some expense up front, maintenance along the way, and the hope of a payoff at the end of the season.
