Any Home Bakers Here?

I need one of those lol and i would have gotten it out earlier but i breastfeed our newborn and he doesnt let go easily.

How long will the bread last by the way?

Freeze two loaves--Take one out when the first one is gone.

Often most of the first loaf is gone the first day though. I will keep about a week out of the freezer.

Ok thanks so it last longer then french bread after four days out (we dont eat alot of bread) it gets moldy. I just prefer not to waste it.

What to do with left over ham? Found this recipe on Betty Crocker's site, an original 1950's recipe for Bisquik but would be better with real homemade crust - reviews on several sites are 5 stars, but most recommend increasing the filling recipe volume for bought crusts.

Ham, Pineapple and Cheddar Quiche

Ingredients:

Crust:

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups Original Bisquick

    mix
  • 2 tablespoons boiling water

Filling :

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (6 oz)
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped cooked ham (4 oz)
  • 3 medium green onions, sliced (3 tablespoons)
  • 1 can (8 oz) pineapple tidbits in juice, well drained
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

Directions:

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 9-inch glass pie plate with cooking spray. In medium bowl, cut butter into Bisquick mix, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until crumbly. Add boiling water; stir vigorously until soft dough forms. Press dough on bottom and up side of pie plate, using fingers dipped in Bisquick mix, forming edge on rim of pie plate.
Sprinkle cheese, ham, onions and pineapple in crust. In medium bowl, beat eggs, half-and-half and pepper until blended. Pour into crust.
Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

I tried the recipe, used regular Vidalia type onions instead of the green ones.

It was OK, but needs a little something. Should have added some salt and maybe a pinch of clove?

I used regular store bought pie shells - recipe made 2, so have one in freezer and when baked will try spicing it up after cooked to see what will make it a little better.

I'm not a ham & pineapple fan so maybe someone else will have more to offer but what about something like allspice? Not sure, looks like it needs something to spice it up.

I love ham and pineapple - we used to cover ham with pineapple slices and push cloves into the ham to bake.

Got some allspice, will try that as well.

OOHHHH WE ! does that ever look good to me

I would add something to compliment the pineapple like some Bell pepper and tomato.

or maybe jalapeno and garlic.

I will have to put that one on file.

Bell Pepper and Tomato might be the trick? But jalapeño and garlic, hmmmm can't quite picture those with pineapple.

Will have to wait till next time to try the bp and tomato.

IMO one major was no salt - the egg/half n half needed some. I thought the cheese would bring in enough, but that may be the major lack.

I am reading a cooking geek book now called the Food Lab. The Author said that the most common problem with home food is not adding enough salt.

My Mom taught me that salt was a flavor enhancer--add a pinch to your frosting and taste the difference.
