I wonder if that's what mom did - unfortunately, I didn't pay close enough attention or just don't remember.
Did she have a bowl by the stove that she poured the bacon fat into? If so it went into a lot of things you had--corn bread and etc.

Bacon fat is just flavored lard. Lard is officially a nutritional neutral food now like butter. Soon it will be officially good for you.

Bacon fat is the base for a lot of chowders too. Usually your fry the bacon and then remove it an crumble it. Then the onions and celery are fried in the bacon fat

No, she definitely didn't have a bowl of bacon fat on the stove. She generally tried to make fairly healthy meals, with not too much fat in them. However, she would occasionally use a few less-than-healthy ingredients, so I wouldn't be surprised if she might have added a little bacon to her soup. I know one thing, she was a very good cook!

Oddly, many of the things we were told were un healthy are healthy and things that were healthy are bad for us. Crisco and margarine are now known to cause cancer and heart disease. Butter caused neither but can make you fat if you eat too much.

On the other hand, butter will make you feel full so you do not gorge on sugar calories...sugar calories do not make you feel full even if you eat thousands of calories of it.

Weird!(and with the oil and sugar companies criminal)
