So you just pick up a piece of rock, smack it in an appropriate way and hope it has a fossil in that plane?

Tough job but someone has to do it!

yeah, that’s basically it.

Pardon me while I grab my hammer and some gravel

Try a rock that is made up of many small rocks, like sedimentary rock. I found a few gastropods that way once.

I’ll attach a picture of what I mean later.

This is the type of rock I found once that led to my first fossil discovery. I found two gastropods, some petrified wood, (which is in the picture) and five vertebrae pieces in a rock just like this one in my hand. I found them all when I slowly broke it open. Emphasis on SLOWLY. You don’t want to damage the fossils.

For this type of rock, I did not split it like the ones in Wyoming. I just slowly chiseled pieces away.

Thanks for the link. Another way I might get into The Sourdough Club. Instead of just reading about it and seeing everyone's great pictures.
Yay, another one for the SD club! Once you get one started you can store it in the fridge, and you can use it forever!
