I grow Red Pontiacs because they make superb smashed taters, fried, baked and french fries.I buy nothing but russets for home fries or bakers or mashed
I normally grow Red Pontiac, Purple Vikiing, Red Gold and a purple variety. My sprouting rate is 100%.This year, I have more varieties of potatoes than I've ever planted. I have my stand by, Kennebec, my most prolific, Elba, and 4 of my own from true potato seed, that were on a Caribou plant. These are all russets, the Caribou being the most russeted skin, ie, holds the most dirt. I decided not to grow those any more when they were the least productive, but potatoes from my own seed...? I couldn't resist.
I also have 2 varieties of blue potatoes. I got a pound of Purple Majesty, and I gotta say I'm underwhelmed with how they sprouted: 4 out of 8 hills. The other purple is Magic Molly. That one sprouted 100%, 18 for 18 hills.
I tried to get some called Mountain Rose, but they were sold out.

Yes!!! Made my own sourdough starter and started baking sourdough. I brought it to work for people to try and now I sell it on the side! I have tried sourdough cinnamon rolls and bagels. I make homemade donuts too!
I did that when I couldn't get Purple Viking seed potatoes for a couple of years. I believe you can find information about growing them in bags over on SufficientSelf.com . Of course I may be misremembering and it might be one of the other sister sites.Have you ever grown potatoes in 5 gallon buckets? I experimented with that this season, with some good results. Of course, I harvested early, because I wanted to try smaller potatoes.
