Hi all,

Just got two mixed breed chicks that are about 6 weeks old. Their dad is a Buff Orpington for sure, apparently.
Mom could be any of the following:
White Rock
Danish Brown Leghorn
New Hampshire Red
Jersey Giant

Black Copper Maran
Barred Rock
Americauna

The man who sold them said he thought the lighter colored one was part Americauna because of its puffy cheeks. The light one is in the last two pics.
I have no idea about the other one. It is bigger but I'm not sure they're the same age. I saw the orp/barred rock crosses and it doesn't look like them but I'm sure there are many variations with mixed breeds.
Does anyone have any idea what the darker one could be (1st 3 pics)?
Or is it too early to tell?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO why do you think a roo?
There's quite a bit of comb showing in my opinion for that young of a bird. I would say roo with about 70% certainty at this point. I could be wrong though, and there might be something in the mix that makes pullets develop combs pretty early too. Is that one more active and brave than the other one?

Hmm. I hadn't noticed that, see we had some other chicks that got to about 6 weeks before they were killed :( I think they had about the same comb size. they were an australorp and a buckeye.
SHE is actually quite calm, doesn't struggle when you pick her up, seems not as jumpy and flighty as the other. Of course they both still run away but when I do have them in smallish place like their makeshift coop instead of the run, it's very easy to scoop up the darker one. Just sort of stands there.

It's a funny thing, but with chickens you keep wishing that a lot more than with other things.

I hope so!!! Already love them

Here are comb pics of the dark one...
I compared their wattles and they seem the same size. Is that relevant?
I think I read something about saddle feathers being straight too in young roos.

I'm still saying roo, but you could try posting a pic of him together with age and breed guesses in one of the "What breed is this?" threads. Usually you get more experienced sexers there.

Haven't seen any of those, I'll go look. Thanks!
