Any ideas about what she might be???

Sorry blue laced red Wyandotte MIX. I'm not up on my EE but would you call her one if she lays brown eggs?

as long as the bird is carring the blue egg laying gene it is considered an EE. now ee's can look like anything and lay any color of egg along with have any color of leg color and any type comb

It is fun though to speculate what their heritage might be.
I'd love to know what breeds might be behind my Candy. She looks like she's wearing tweed - and (I think) lays a brown speckled egg. This is an old picture - her collar is almost all speckled now, not nearly as white.

Horribly blurry - sorry - a pea comb.... but sadly, no colored eggs (yet).

So...just because she does not have a pea comb and lay a blue egg...she can still be an EE?

As EEs are an entirely mixed breed of birds, it is very difficult to draw a line in the sand about the issue. EEs can lay any color egg under the sun, and in fact, I have a bird similarily colored to yours that lays a nice rosey brown egg.

Unfortunately, the presence of the pea comb does not guarentee the blue egg gene. The genes for both traits lie very close to one another on the chromosome, so that when gene recombination happens during reproduction, they are very commonly not split up, and inherited together. But it's not guarenteed. Just a high probability.

To me, your bird has crossed my own personal mental line in the sand by lacking too many EE features, and is not an EE, but a barnyard mix. But my opinion wouldn't be any more valid than someone who passionately told you that she IS an EE.

I think why I am so curious here is because she came from the feed store, and is hatchery stock, what they said was an "ameracana" but I know it's not possible to get pure amerana's from the hatchery...I was happy with EE though, I just wanted some blue eggs!- she looked just like the 3 she came with when she was young- so maybe she is infact an EE- but like you mentioned, she really is lacking a lot of the typical characteristics! Mystery bird I guess! Also, the others she came with, who look like typical EE's have laid blue eggs.

I have 4 EE's...3 have pea combs, one a single comb. Of the pea combs, one lays blue, one lays green, one lays cream colored eggs. The single comb also lays a creme colored egg. Just never know what your gonna get!!! :)

Taken directly from the breed section here on BYC;

The Easter Egger is not really a breed. They are relationed to the breeds Ameraucanas and Araucanas, then bred with many different breeds so they no longer fit either breed's standards. They usually have muffs & pea combs, but come in nearly every variety and color, some even have ear tufts or are rumpless. Each EE is different, but overall they are usually a smaller bird that lays pink, green, or blue eggs. They are normally friendly and calm, and their colorful eggs make them a popular choice in backyard flocks.

I believe she was bred as an easter egger. Her parents were both easter eggers. The hatchery sold her in good faith as a green egg laying bird. Just like not all birds from pure parents meet a breed standard, some don't fit what we expect of an easter egger.

But you have our blessing to call her whatever you wish...............

I'll just call her by her name- I'm not trying to breed or meet any standard here- just wanting sweet chickens who lay eggs, and that's what I've got!
