Any Information on Fowl Pox/ outcomes/ treatments ?

I have a couple of friends that some of their chickens have fowl pox. Is there any treatment? What is the usual outcome? How contagious is it? Any information would be greatly appreciated !!!

If it's just dry pox (crusty scabs on combs/wattles), it really just needs to run the course. You can use betadine on the scabs (apply with a q-tip) and make sure the scabs don't cover anything important. It will go away in a few weeks!

If it's a problem, you might want to consider vaccinating the rest as well. It's spread by mosquitos.

Wet pox (where there are lesions in the mouth causing problems with breathing and eating) is a different story.

My chickens got fowl pox a few months back, and now some of the younger pullets have come down with it.

If its dry pox, then you don't need to worry. I like to think of it like chicken pox in children.

They will get black spots and scabs on their wattles and combs, so a lot, others a few.

I don't do anything. Soon the scabs fall off and the comb looks normal again.

It does not seem to bother the birds at all. No scratching the spots or anything like that.

Once they recover they will have resistance to that virus in the future.

The virus is carried by mosquitoes.

Some people say that the egg production will go down and not recover to maximum after the disease, but I did not find this true. Maybe on large scale egg farms there will be a percentage drop in eggs produced, but in my small flock I have not noticed any difference.
