So I have 6 Buff orpingtons in a 4 foot by 3 foot wood box plenty of room for cool and hot side. My worry is temp requirements for the smaller birds and older birds. Will the older birds regulate their own heat or will they get to hot. The box is outside in a room that is closed off from the wind and elements but still reaches 86 degrees with the Temperature sitting maybe 2-4 inches from the center of the 250 watt red light I have. All those Buff Orptingtons are going to be 3 weeks on Wednesday the 9th while the other will only be 2 weeks old. Would anyone see any issue with adding these birds with the rest as I only have one bos and no other brooder lights. I know to watch at first is a concern for reall bullying signs but does anyone see a real issue adding these splash/black/blue Oprington chicks. I will add at max 3 due to regulations by the city. thanks again I will add a picture here soon of them on this update of the ones I have.

I think they are close enough in age to get along well together. Go for it!

I did it with no issues at all and I had almost a two week difference in ages. Right now the littler ones are out in the big coop with the older ones. With all of them being very well feathered, I felt it would work out and it has. I had no bullying, and in fact one of my Easter Eggers has "adopted" one of the smaller chicks - you never see one without the other. Gladys lets her sleep tucked up against her.

Gladys, 6 weeks, Ida, 4 weeks

Our chicks have all been together since we got them, and we have at least a 4 week gap between oldest and youngest, and a very wide size range. There has been no bullying or injurious pecking at all, and they've been together almost a month now. They did fine thermoregulating, too, and tonight they even went into the house on their own at sunset. Good luck!

These are my ladies. So far so good in the brooder, at first the others were unaware of the dark colored feet being part of the chicks. I got the 3, 1 splash orpington, 1 black orpington, and then i'm not exactly sure what the white one is. I know its a buff mix if I remember right the lady said it was mixed with Amaracauna maybe. but I can't remember for sure. The gold Buff is one of my 3 week olders.
