Any martial artists here?

i was fencing in high school.... got very serious for a while... then went to a weapons only kung fu class... got beat up by anyone after they kicked the stick out of my hand... LOL... but i learned how to use broad sword, long sword, daggers, bo staff, tappered staff, nunchuks, chain whips, whips, throwing knives, long bow/arrow, throwing needles, and whatever else i grab... like pocket sand or jackie chan props... LOL...

i've been fat for a while, i need to get fit and join some sort of dojo again... maybe i'll do kung fu or whatever is legit in my area...

Revival of an old thread! So interesting to hear what everyone does, I saw a fencing competition at a sports complex one time and thought it was facinating. Thought maybe fencing/knife fighting might be a valuable skill for when the zombie apocolypse happens!

Haha, anyways... I do brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ), thai kickboxing, grappling, and run a non profit with my hubby that teaches free self defense to the community. LOOOOOVE IT! Anyone else into BJJ?

Seems to me a lot of the values you learn through martial arts cross over into lifestyle changes in regards to ethical foods and sustainable practices. For me my journey in both areas have been simultaneous.

Just saying hi and wondering what other martial artists are out there and would be interested in sharing ideas about how your school/instructor incorporates incentives for a "greener" way of living within their school. I'm an instructor and have discussed that in order for the kids to obtain their green belt, that in addition to the required techniques that they must take on a "green" project (initiate a recycling program somewhere there isn't one, doing a neighborhood clean up, volunteering, etc). What other ideas?

Sounds neat duck! Locally we often have days where people get together with DNR and remove invasive plants that are taking over native ones, there are tree planting days, educational programs about the major threats to biodiversity, trash pick up, etc. great idea. :D
