What are roosts made of that they are slippery?

They’re wood. One is a 2x4 and the rest are branches. They are thick branches, but I like that the towels make them even thicker. Easy to clean, too. Just wash the towels! Is this nuts?

I just don't think it's really necessary, though I'm sure they're used to it by now. Only concern off the top of my head is if the towels get damp at all and then freeze, that's probably colder than if they stood on the bare wood. Also if the towels are the type with terry cloth loops, potentially a nail could get snagged.

Thanks. Towels were swapped out with fresh ones (I have them to keep the roosts from being slippery... I should probably find some sort of rubber mat instead.) The main/lower coop seems cozy. The upper coop (addition) seems drafty at the highest roost (not really a roost... a left over steering wheel from the play structure, but the girls like it, so I left it), which is right beside window/vent. Thankfully, they had the sense not to roost there tonight. (I was envisioning frostbite, as my Brown Leghorn is top hen and usually has that spot with her large comb literally right beside the hardware cloth window that seems drafty).

Are you the one I stole this picture from? I love to use it when folks say chickens can't cover their toes unless they're on a flat surface.

Haha! YES! But I wrap that slippery steering wheel now and Cashew (BO) no longer gets to roost there. Usually top hen Margo (Brown Leghorn) gets that spot.

You can’t tell in the photo, but when I’m standing on the ground, that roost is way over my head. It’s about three feet off the floor of the second level of the coop. It’s funky, but my birds love their home!

Thinking I need to find some rubber matting.

You don't really need anything added onto a 2x4 ... and the steering wheel picture proves they don't really need that wrapped either ... they will be fine.
