Any Oddities collectors?? I'm here! :)

My main collection is "Ugly pottery" - you know the handmade stuff you see at garage sales and second and shops that was obviously made by kids in primary school.... that stuff.

The "rules" of my collection are that it must be fired, must be glazed, must be in some way ugly or ill made (and that should not be a deliberate "artsy" pretesion, but genuine lack of skill/talent), must be built and not from a mould and that it should not depict other recognisable objects eg not people/flowers/animals etc. So just dishes/cups/vases and abstract sculptural pieces.

I started collecting these from op-shops when I was about 13, though I didn't quite realise I was building a collection for many years, and as a result lost quite a few lovely pieces to incidental damages.

Now I have several hundred pieces, almost all bought from op-shops, though I have had one or two gifted to me. As a collection it loooks great, even though each piece itself is generally hideous.

I have also hooked a friend on collecting ugly pottery - luckily he lives quite a ways off so we aren't in competition for the local op shops - we tried to go scavenging together at one point and things got.... heated.

I don't have any skulls, yet, though I do think I will have small collection of native animal skulls one day as I have coveted a beautifully mounted bilby skull for several years, and recently decided I weanted a Tawny Frogmouth skull too.

where are the pictures, people!? i would post my whiskers, but i think not even mogvgb would be interested.... they are white or black, short or long, thin or fat. if i ever make a coat out of them, well then i will post.

i have collected a few skulls from the wild, but the wild also then devoured them in various stages of sitting outside. (i guess i would need to know what i am doing to preserve a skull) so for now i stick to the bones i find in owl pellets, they seem very well processed :)

in any case, i really would love to see your collections :) please. (not necessarily museum quality!) i mean the skulls of course, & not the ugly pottery. ;p

Lol.. I'll post some soon. I'm in the middle of rearranging the room mine are in (plus waiting on a few to get here). I need a bigger shelf.. so needless to say a few things have to be rearranged. Once I get done with that I'll post pics.

One of the cat skulls, a goose and several of the rabbit and chicken skulls are in various stages of preserving. If you are looking for any info on how to let me know. I'm no expert.. but I can give you a few tips.

I also collect crystal balls and tarot cards.. dunno if anyone would consider them to be "Oddities" or not. One of the crystal balls is over 100 years old. It's not a giant collection.. but there are a few that I couldn't resist giving a home to.

I don't have much right now, but would love to build a collection of skulls and learn to articulate skeletons.

I have what I believe to be half of the lower jaw bone from a coyote, two goat skulls, some awesome petrified wood, halibut otoliths (the wood and otoliths were sent by our very own Imp), a racoon head (just the head from the pelt, not mounted), a baby alligator head, and some other various skins. I also have the shed fang of a rattlesnake a BYCer sent me a few years ago.

I also like to pick up some strange things from antique stores when the price is right. I recently bought a civilian gas mask from the WWII era. It was too creepy to pass up and the seller sold it to me for only $15 with the original bag. I also have a weird plastic ball thing with layers of different grains inbedded in the plastic. Definitely a conversation piece!

I've just begun collecting old books as well. Not really an odd collection, but I've been trying to buy books that are either science or animal related. The science books are a riot to read through. There are just so many outdated things in them! It's a good way to see how far we've come!

My collection is small, but hopefully someday I will have more money to start doing some more serious collecting!

I collect old books as well. I don't have much now, but I have a couple books published in the 1890's, one that is so old it is not even marked, and two 1921 miniature leather Tennyson books. The one 1890 book is so old you can't touch and interior page without it flaking. I also have an early 1900's cook book. There is a antique store right up the road from me and every once in a while they will get a good book. I also have the compete collection of the Barnes&Noble leather-bound collection, which looks amazing on my bookshelf.
