OK so I'm wondering if any of you are able to kill and eat your birds? I want to be able to do so, but I don't know that I can. I dont know that I would have what it takes to know they would die eventually. Anyone else have this problem?

Not yet but the girls that didn't start to lay yet were threatened!

Yes, I have eaten my extra roos. It helped that I didn't process them, I found someone who does it for $2.00 a bird. It also helped that as soon as I knew they were roos, I didn't play with them. I named them, Fried, Grilled, Roasted, Baked....etc. But seriously,
it was a bit hard at first, but you just have to remember that the chicken you buy in the store was once alive also, but maybe not under good conditions, and you know what went into your birds, therefore you know what you are REALLY eating.

I just have layer chicks right now (I HOPE!

) but I would like SOMEDAY get to the point of raising meat chickens. Gonna take my time with that goal though...no rush, hehehe

I am uncomfortable now cooking and eating any chicken since I raised chicks this summer. I could never eat my own babies!

I only wish I were allowed to have them.

Its become nearly impossible to find ordinary, grocery-store chickens that haven't been injected with "broth" -- which almost always contains something that puts my DH in the bathroom for hours if I accidentally buy meat that had the price sticker over the fine print.

You bet I'd eat my chickens!

They're livestock. Producing food for people is what chickens do.

Thanks for the replys. I am seriously thinking about it myself but not sure I could do the processing. I feed my dogs a raw diet and so I'm buying a crap load of chicken all the time and I have chickens out back that would do just fine, well not them but others I could get. I can't eat the ones I have now as Im to attatched. I would have to get some I don't mess with.

I process and eat my birds. I don't raise meat birds. I just process my laying hens and extra rooster as new younger ones come along. If they are very old I cut the breast out and can the rest. I package the breast seperately. I usually kill enough to last me a few months and by then I have youngsters coming along ready to lay and process a few more.
I have no problem with this. Its why I raise chickens and rabbits.

It makes me uncomfortable to know that the chickens' days are numbered, or that this is their last night and in the morning they will meet the axe, and (in some odd way I do not understand and am not claiming is logical) it *particularly* bothers me that THEY don't know this, like I'm being dishonest with them or something.

However.

We are not vegetarians -- left to my own devices I'd eat less meat than I do, but not none, and DH and kids are very not-vegetarian.

And I feel it is a WHOLE lot more honest and kind and responsible to raise the birds myself, well and happily, and slaughter them quickly and without confusion or fear or the stress of transport and confinement, than to buy supermarket chickens (which aren't as good to eat, either).

I think it is kind of SUPPOSED to bother ya, to some however-small degree, to take a life. But buying something pre-killed and pre-shrink-wrapped-on-styrofoam is not ONE BIT LESS taking a life than if you're the one swinging the axe.

JMHO,

Pat
