Any one else w/ a chicken treat drawer?

My kindred spirits! I am so glad to hear I am not the only one who stocks up on "Girl treats". My girls are always on my grocery list. Can you tell I am a "back yard-er?" and not a farmer?

Yep, there is a space for them, a tub of meal worms, some veg and yogurt. I shop for them right now but we planted a garden this year and will have tomatoes, squash and cantelope for them soon.

My poor birds, I only keep a tupperware container of dried mealworms and a coffee can of safflower seeds. I haven't dedicated a spot in my fridge for them yet, They get scraps as I clean out the fridge instead of using the garbage disposal. But to those of you who actually shop for your birds, have you talked with the produce person at your supermarket as to what they do with their unsold produce?

I don't have a drawer, but I feel guilty if I eat the foods they like the most! In the early spring, I hardly ate any of my homegrown organic spinach, because the chicks loved it so much. Right now, they are getting the lion's share of the beets and beet greens. They also love organic bananas and the higher priced organic red grapes. I have to tell myself that it is okay for me to eat some, too! Spoiled rotten chickens!

As my organic garden starts to produce, I find myself giving most of the produce to the chickens. I tell myself that I am going for the almost orange yolks, which only comes about when the chickens are eating lots of greens and colorful veggies like carrots and red bell peppers. I planted comfrey for them, so that should suffice to get deeply colored yolks, but I will still be giving them lots of extras just to watch them go crazy over some treats.

I loved reading through this thread!!! Kindred spirits indeed.

My girls also have a spot on my shopping list and fridge and pantry! As far as garden items....they help themselves (much to DH's frustration) to whatever they feel like at the moment. Big garden.... just a few chickens....it works! hahahahaaaa! DH planted 3 hills of 3 different squash.... next day, hills were gone and seeds scattered whoknowswhere!! We have squash growing but will have to wait to identify it! They finally settled on a dust bowl somewhere else and the garden isn't getting torn up anymore. LOL!

Keeps life interesting. Obviously, we don't sweat the small stuff.

I laughed my way through the posts - what great ideas for pampering our girls (and guys)! We get markdown yoghurt from the store and have been eating it ourselves, but now I'll have to get more for them!

We do have a garden and lately have been giving them the overripe strawberries. Boy, do they love those. It's grab and run and chicken chase is on!

Believe it or not, the wild mustard is their all time favorite right now.
