Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Why can't my chickens just all get along??? I am at my wits end am in tears presently-I'm so frustrated with Clemi. I finally just put her back in with everyone and she just continues to chase and taunt them. She is now chasing my partridge plymouth. i noticed my RIR has been giving her a few "what fors" and she doesn't attack her. So, that makes me think the other 3 are trying to be 2nd in command maybe? I dunno, but seriously I hate this. I was able to separate them in runs, still attached but blocked the entrance between the two and she tried attacking them through that! LOL She settled down and I found her pecking happily, etc., so I joined the two runs. Hoping they can make it to bed time without killing each other. I worry so that she's going to injure someone seriously....on another note, sounds like some of you have had a rough time of it. My sister went through a horrible situation with an abusive husband, then she had 2 kids with him, and then they divorced and she became a drug addict, spent time in rehab and jail but happy to say she now lives very close to me and is doing so much better. Living with a seriously nice guy, her daughters are grown and have children of their own who have children of their own...LOL I have lots of nieces and nephews --- I went through so much with her but we all made it through with love and support which I think is so imporant.

MB sorry for the snow--we missed that storm completely--got nothing, not even a snow flurry. Upper 40's today and sue has been shining for 2 days in a row. Tomorrow -- rain. I don't know what i'll do with the crazy bird if the weather is bad--- I don't think I can trust her to be in a confined space with them all day......uhg worries.

So sorry kdwag... you know, some of them are just bullies I guess. Perhaps now, we have to just let them dook it out, and see what transpires. I would say as long as there is no serious blood flowing, flesh tearting/eating perhaps they just have to work it out. If there is the blood flowing, flesh tearing, you have a decision on your hands. We all have different levels of what we can tolerate, and what drives us to tears. When I mentioned in another thread that I couldn't stand the bare spots, and now bare heads some of the girls have due to Dukes rough mating, I got blasted out of the thread by the old timers who thought I was some sort of tree hugging softee. I guess some people chalk that up to a rooster being a rooster, but when I hear there are plenty of roosters that don't pull feathers, and bare their girls backs but still manage to fertilize eggs, I realize I too have a decision on my hands. That combined with his attacking people,, I have a decision on my hands! I think I am realizing what my decision is going to be, but in the meantime, I too am putting up with behaviour I wish I could change. If she were mine, and she ripped up another hen again, I would rehome her. Easier said than done I guess, but try to think about your options. I have started to. I have heard about a woman who has a huge free range farm. Duke sounds like the perfect rooster, he will defend to the death. Maybe that is why I still haven't lost one, he is quite the protector.. a stupid protector, but a protector none the less.

Hang in there honey,, you'll come to the decision, and I am sure it will be the right one for you,

I have 2 that squat, but no egg song or eggs yet. They are enjoying some tomatoes today. Maybe the will repay with eggs tomorrow!!
I hope so Aggie,,, my girls go crazy for tomatoes. When the little cherry tomatoes I buy get too wrinkly to eat, I chop em up and give em to the girls. They go crazy, even eat all the little seeds and try to drink up every bit of juice!

When I saw my first squat, I think it was about another 2 weeks till eggs. Keep us posted!

How old are your girls? Maybe the pinless peeper might help her. Then she wont be able to see right in front of her. Maybe add some things in there so its like an obstacle course. I have a few cinder blocks and some 2x4s and 2x2s the run for my girls to stand on. Same are tall enough for them to go under and some they have to go over. I also put a piece of fire wood in there that can't roll so they can stand on it. My run is 8x16 with a 4x4 spot under the coop that they can get under. They cant really get in to a full on chasing match in there.

I just have to post this and see if anyone else has observed this: When one of the chickens is in the nesting box, another one stands at the base of the ramp, like a sentry. The other 6 are silent, they don't move from their place in the pen, they might peck at the ground or even quietly eat but there's not a peep out of any of them. It's hilarious but been going on for quite a few days now so I know it's not a fluke.

Do you have a roo? SHe may be taking on the role of a rooster. Duke at hatching time is quite hysterical. He makes the loudest egg songs, like he is a Lamaze coach. He struts up and down the ramp, checking on whoever is activly trying to lay an egg. The other's also check in from time to time, like labor nurses. Too funny. I even caught it on video the other day. I have to try to get it to post here.

Okayyyyy! That does make sense. I don't have a roo but I do have Miss Audrey who puts on a suit and tie every morning and mounts some poor unsuspecting girl. So maybe she's taking over that duty and not just being "top hen."

Oh that's a photo of Audrey in my avatar. She's by far the friendliest of all the girls, the first to jump up on my knee and talk to me, but she's extremely bossy to the others, knocking them in the head at the feed bowls. I've even expanded their feeding bowls so they have 4.
