Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

We lost our first chicken today. She was murdered by the dogs. They have always been interested in her alone...poor baby.

Rest in peace Hope.

Oh so sorry!!

Oh, so sorry aggie about your bird. Darn those dogs. I went out today expecting 3 eggs but only found 1. Lucy and Liza must be taking the day off. Sure do miss Clara and she laid every day, regardless. :( WIndy as crap here today and supposed to be 35 MPH tomorrow with strong storms and heavy rains. Oh I long for the day when we have warmth without wind and/or rain. The mosquitos aren't being affected though, they were out in full force yesterday. Happy egg laying and hope those EEs get going soon.

Worked in the flowerbeds all day today...weeded, placed layer of newspaper down, mulch...etc. I even poisoned some ants (i know..big NO NO with chickens) I put the poison then a thick layer of newspaper then thick mulch...THEN a little barricade around where the ants were. So THEN the dang ants decided to come way out on the driveway to die!!! Ive been on duty making sure no chicken eats the dead or dying ants..UGHHHHHH. Now im going to sweep up all the dead ones. And in the mean time I found a huge dug out spot in the new mulch with shredded newspaper. Come on chickens....could you please go play somewhere else!!!!!! As i am new to chickens im learning that the flowerbeds may not look perfect this summer......

Happy Aggie...sorry for your loss...hate to hear that:(

Melabella, what a story...it's hard to hold back tears. What a loss for your family! We've had so many big losses the past few decades. This Boston one had me in a knot because my 28 year old son was running the marathon that day. I was a complete mess for 45 minutes waiting to find out...eventually he was able to use someone's computer to post "safe" on his FB page. He was at mile 25 1/2 when he ran into a crowd of runners not running and then they were all diverted to a different route. Very thankful he was not having a good running day and was behind the bombs, but extremely sad about the losses...when those families got notices, it was not good news as mine was. It is hard to stay open and loving at times like this when it appears that humanity doesn't have much....but I remember Mr. Rogers. I remember him telling what his mother said when he was a boy hearing about a fearful disaster....she said....look for the helpers....look how many people help and are caring. So despite the destroyers, I try to not forget for a second that the goodness is still there.

My kids got the biggest kick out of all the hens doing the squat yesterday. My youngest gave them all a pep talk about laying eggs this morning.
So nice that they are squatting for you! Mine laid about 2-3 weeks after I noticed the first squat so hopefully you will getting eggs before long! I don't think I properly welcomed you to the thread... soooooo
to our egg waitin thread, please keep us posted to what your girls are up to! Happy to have you Rowdie!

Yes, I too have discovered the "no place is sacred" attitude with beds, flowers, and anything we try to keep in an orderly fashion around here! Since we have bought this house 3 years ago, I am dying to put in some nice flower beds, but since I am streched so thin in the financial dept, it just might have to wait until next year. the have turned one flower bed from last year into their dust bath. Good Luck with getting rid of the ants.. I hate when insects get into our living space!

xshoshin,

My heart was skipping while I was reading your post. Thank God your son is safe and healthy, I get chills thinking about how nervous and anxious you must have been. I can't imagine all those runners, with their mindsets so intent on their goal, and the total mindset it takes to train for an event like that, and to be stopped, and to step into the confusion and panic of the situation. I can only imagine the post traumatic stress for so many of these people. I love your reminder of Mr. Rogers, and you are so right, look at all the helpers, fellow people helping each other. I also see this window into the horror of what our military see on a daily basis, and I pray for all those men and woman who have to endure the agony of war. Thank you for letting us know your son is all right, and hope you get to wrap your arms around him very soon.

Hope everyone is well tonight, hug those close to you.

Me to Xshoshin... I know that you were a California person and I did not even think ... I had wondered if anyone here had family in the race. I am so happy for you that all turned out well.

Jklyles1.. I was in the garden today as well. We have so many fox-tails. They get every were.... Sit on the ground to weed and you will find them in your underwear.... I have an herb garden real close to my run. When I let my girls out... they will look throw there but I have been mostly lucky. And I don't let them out for to long anyway. The plumbago had taken a hit or two... but is doing nicely right now. The veggie garden is on the other side of the property and they have not been that far. So all is good for now... I worry about later when I really want to let them out to ... but do to birds of prey I may stick to this plan. Letting them out only for a couple of hours in the late afternoon when I can watch them.
I did not know that we could not use ant poison when we have chickens. Was not thinking about it yet... I am glad you wrote about that. I just found a new ant colony in the herb garden when I was weeding. The only ones that I had poised were way out in a different part of the property that the chickens would not get to... and I did not have them at that time. Now I know if I do use it that I can not use it anywhere I know they will go. Goodness... so much to learn...

So tired but I got to get to sewing... Got lots to do before this weekend. Maybe I will show you all pics later.... of what I sew....

Xshoshin, I'm glad your son is safe. I flipped on the news this morning and see the coverage of that fertilizer plant explosion in Texas. So, I'm afraid to ask, anyone affected by that? When it rains it pours-- it sounds like many have lost their lives.

My RIR didn't lay yesterday-- that's so rare for her. Today she was pacing up a storm while I was scooping poop in the coop....hey a rhyme and although she doesn't like me to pet her, she listens so intently when I talk to her. She's so pretty, I keep telling her that. I swear she understands what I say. They are all doing well without Clara. I gave them an apple yesterday and they took turns pecking with just a few warnings to each other. I'm so anxious to get working on my new coop although I don't know if I'm going to get any more chickens at this point. We'll see how brave I get later. My husband is due home today so hoping for a safe return. I'm so paranoid these days.

Hope you get some eggs soon Rowdie, and thinking of you Aggie. Hope everyone has a good day, I'm watching severe storms racing our way today, yippee--

Thanks for all the kinds words everyone...I am one of the very lucky ones. Melabella, you know firsthand what it is to wait in agony and then get devastating news...it so makes me appreciate your kind words especially. The Boston College students (my son is graduating the law school next month) are planning an "all in for Boston" walk to the finish line to put closure on that race and to say "F you" to the terrorist(s). Boston will not be made to fear.

jklyles and cat...there is nothing that will turn a garden into a dirt bath faster than a bunch of hens. Geez...I want their area to look nice but there's very little they won't either eat or dig up. While they have pecked off the lower leaves, the roses do survive and thrive. They don't touch bird of paradise. I was told they don't like rosemary but they stripped a little bush of it within hours. I just bought two plants to put just outside their gate....butterfly bush and butterfly weed (which I think is just milkweed)...they haven't bothered that when they've been out. My garden currently only has onions and little thai (HOT!!!) peppers in it and while they don't eat it, they managed to kick up a bunch of onions in order to make a dirt nest. They ate a bell pepper plant but don't touch the tomatoes. They love the lower leaves of hollyhock but nothing stops hollyhock. I think the trick will be to either plant something big enough that losing the bottom part won't hurt it or protect the area around the planting area with big rocks. They are masterful destroyers!!! But I have to say, watching them do it is absolutely mesmerizing....

Aggie, amidst the human tragedy, I am still very saddened by the loss of your chickie girl. The carnage....and I'm sure you were angry with the dogs, but :::heavy sigh::: they were just being dogs.

Back to eggs....why is it that with four brown egg layers and only one blue, if I'm going to drop, dent or crack an egg on the way in the house, it is ALWAYS the blue one!???!?

And I'm adding my picture of Mr. Rogers' story for those who might like to see it...
