HA! I ordered 10 girls from Meyer and got 9 and one Roo! You would think with all the poor lil male day olds, they could have picked one for someone who actually wanted one! Thanks! They are sweet. I don't have a roo yet, I ordered one roo when I got my girls from Ideal, but they mis-sexed him and I wound up with 13 girls from Ideal (down to 12 after a mishap). I wasn't thrilled with the colors the chicks were (all the same color) so I went to the local feed store and found a couple that were a little different than the ones from the hatchery. I do plan on getting a roo this spring, I want to hatch out a few chicks each year for replacement purposes.
WE are in the exact same place.. one of out of 9 laying, and I have yet to hear what I thought was the traditional "egg song". We rented next to a farm for a year, they had abougt 30 chickens, and I distincly remember that "bawk, bawk, bawk,,baaaacaaawwwww". I now know what that was!Still waiting on someone to lay this morning. Yesterday I saw Pepper mounting my two americanas which had previously ran every time he tried mate with them so that is a good sign. All 10 of them do the egg squat for me which makes Pepper not so happy. Now if someone would just sing the song I will be ready to run to the coop and find who is laying! I sure would like to see two eggs this morning. Only having 1 out of 10 laying is better than nothing but 8 out of 10 would be much nicer!![]()
Some days I look at my girls and think...yeah, they're ready! It's going to be any day now! And then other days I'll think...is that comb red or dark pink? So yesterday I was sure none of my younger girls were going to lay any time soon. But this morning I've been watching them through the window, and my EE Irlene keeps climbing up to the nesting box, then climbing back down. And Kenny Rogers is chasing her all over the run, trying to dance with her, but she's not having it. Kenny isn't haven't much like with his girls lately. My theory is that his legs are too short. Don't tell him I said that.
My chickens combs always change colors a little. They turn redder when they're either hot or excited, and more pink when they're cold or relaxed. I can pet them and watch the color change. I often have frostbite issues with the chickens who have the biggest combs. I'm pretty sure my Jersey Giant has a couple of spots on hers. I hear you're supposed to have good ventilation in the coop to prevent condensation, but my coop is very open and well ventilated. I actually think the cold and moisture might be the problem. We live in the mountains, and the coop is next to a river. I hope we both get more eggs soon. I'm still only getting one egg a day. It's so tricky judging development with peacombs.![]()
You will be a couple of weeks away. I wonder if combs and waddles fade in the cold or winter. I suspect my girl who had the reddest comb might have got a bit of frostbite from the single digit nights we had as her points on the front are faded and one is a bit grey. Other girls are a bit less red too. I have to ask over at the other thread. I am such a newbie, I don't know these things. I have 4 or 5 girls climbing up the plank, making their small bawk, bawk, and coming back down as well. Must be all practising going on.
You/we will have more eggs soon enough!
