Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Thanks. My girls are mixes, They all hatched from a local small scale breeder/egg producer her hens are all Silver-laced Wyandotte and her roo is an Easter Egger. She's been breeding the wyandottes for awhile concentrating on getting a robust flock that forages/free ranges well and produces a true nice dual purpose...heavy enough to have some meat for eating but still have decent egg production. She brought in an EE roo to see if she could get some colored eggs in her flock. He's new so it was a bit of a mystery what his chick would be like. I liked the idea of getting local birds that are dual purpose, well adapted to the weather here, and thought the mystery of what the chicks would turn out like and what color their eggs might be would be fun. I just posted more pics of them here https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/935174/photo-shoot-in-honor-of-my-flocks-1st-egg#post_14299943

So it's a bit of an experiment and I had no idea what color my girls would lay. I'm thrilled with the olive color. I can't wait to see what other colors I might get. I expect at least some will lay shades of brown like the wyandottes but I love to get some move olives and greens. I also realized I miss counted their age. They're almost 6 months, somehow I was thinking 6 months was 28 weeks not 24 (don't know what happened to my math skills). Anyway they're really 23 weeks old not 27.

What breed are your olive eggers?

My Olive Eggers are from Meyer hatchery that claim to use Legbars, Marans and Ameraucanas to cross to make theirs. One of my girls got the crest, and the other one doesn't .. they are so cute. Interesting looking birds I will try and catch a photo of them. I will head over to that thread you posted and take a look at your pictures. Keep us posted as the others lay, I would love to see the various shades.

Hi,
I love reading all the posts from everyone. I have a black australorp and a barred rock they are 27 weeks old and we just got our 1st eggs yesterday Nov 3. The really strange thing is only one of them squat and show signs of being ready but when I found the eggs in the nesting box there were 4 small brown eggs.
I had just cleaned the coop the day before and I really think I would have seen any eggs as I have been so anxious to get an egg.
So this will always be a puzzle to us. Anyway the eggs were small but great! Today the australorp was out in the yard free ranging and she went into the coop and into the nesting box and about 30 min later she came out. I went and looked and found a nice size egg. This was about 3pm. And we live in North Idaho. I really didn't think we would get any eggs until the spring due to the short daylight hours now.
I am so happy about her laying eggs finally. I don't think the barred rock has laid yet as she is not squatting at all.
I read that letting them roam and get excersize helps.
Anyway just be patient and you will get eggs!

To BYC and to the Egg Waitin thread! I adore Black Australorp, they are my favorite go to breed for productivity with eggs, and they are such a nice, calm regal looking bird. Love the green sheen to their feathers. My Australorp girls are such wonderful producers. Remember that not all hens will squat for you, just some of them do. I am gathering you don't have a rooster then, as usually if there is a rooster around, I have found they don't squat too much for humans. If you do have a roo, be careful, as some of them don't like you petting their girls when they squat, and view it as a challenge. Isn't if funny that we give them multiple nest boxes and they all end up wanting that one box. You are right about us seeing less eggs during the winter solstice but it is nice to know once Dec. 21'st comes... the daylight starts to increase, and I found in the past, by end of January the layers are full up and running! Keep us posted!

I got two eggs in a row from Aurora my white Maran. Up until today she was laying every other day! woo hoo!

Thanks so much for your info, I love learning more about chickens. Your right we don't have a rooster just the two chickens. It's good to know that they don't all squat, I never would have known. Yes the black australorp is so sweet. She has let me pet her so much and pick her up, and she just seems to really like me. The barred rock runs when I try to pet her, she lets me just a little. Every time I go inside the house she stands at the sliding glass door and looks for me. I am really enjoying them. Thanks for the info on things changing around Jan. Good to know.
Thanks again and best to you & your chickens. Lori

The girls were making quite a fuss this morning and when I went out to check on them 2 eggs! Another nice olive like my 1st and a lighter colored sort of a pale bluish green. So now I have 2 girls who are producing!

Here are the two olive eggs (on top) the lighter blueish green one, and a regular store egg for comparison. My girls eggs seem to be about the same length as the large store egg but quite a bit smaller in girth.

My buff orpington started laying I think 12 days ago and she has been 12 for 12, laid an egg every day since!!!! (Maybe 13/13 or something around that)!!!
None of my other girls have followed though. She's about 23-24 weeks ! At a girl!!!!!

Wow that would be exciting to get that many eggs. Congrats! 3 yesterday for us and 5 today. We were jumping with joy. Chickens are so wonderful. Ours love people so much. They chatter and go on so. I can't imagine ever being without them now.
