Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Organic eggs sell in the supermarket for over $4.00 dollars a dozen. I have bought those eggs in the past and I assure you they were washed off. There is a commercial egg wash available, but I just wash eggs off quickly with cool water and soap (not any anti-bacterial which there are warnings about using then because of the chemicals in them). You might ask friends and relatives to save you their egg cartons which you can recycle. There maybe some who want eggs never washed and for those you can accommodate them. On our farm we kept eggs in a large bowl in the cupboard and used them up in a about two weeks. Here after a week I put them in the frig. I live in FL. I hope this helps.

I have a friend who has a quite a big business selling eggs to the super markets, when his hens lay less than 4 eggs per week he gets rid of them, he called me and offered me 15 for a very low price, they are 7 months old I thought it strange that they are laying so few eggs so I will buy them and i'm sure they will improve their laying habits but if they don't at least I saved them from the knife, going to get them today, kinda eggsited

Good for you, seven months can be early to expect egg laying for some chickens. Different breeds of Chickens apparently have different egg production. I chose Rhode Island Reds because they are known for regular egg laying. I have 6 hens; today I got 4 eggs, 3 eggs each day on former days. one new hen has started to lay. They are about 7 months old and growing bigger. Good luck with your new chickens, I hope they do real well for you.

I collected the chickens from my friend I couldn't believe what I saw when I arrived at his place. He has 580 laying hens the conditions are terrible 4 hens in an area of 1 square foot just eating and laying I don't think they can sleep, most of the hens have very little feathers. I arrived home and introduced them to their new coop they seemed to be very disorientated they didn't know what to do they scratched in the wood shavings on the floor and layed in it as if they were taking a bath. I checked them after dark an they were standing around didn't know what the perches were for so I take it the slept on the floor. went out this morning and found 1 egg on the floor so it will take time for them to realize what the laying boxes are for if ever.

Happy Belated Winter Solstice. Which was yesterday... Sorry but I had family stuff... From now on there should be a little more light each day. All those lazy girls will get a hint and should start laying soon... I hope my girls take the hint ;) I have been getting maybe 1 or 2 eggs a day... Oh well... I have some young girls about 6 months old and some older girls that are just finishing up with molting... it will all come along soon now.
Oh good lord... RobJones I am so happy that you gave those poor girls a new home. This is a big reason that I have chickens. I have heard of others on this website ( a different thread I think) that took in ex-egg farm chickens. It did take them a while to realize they had room and learn to perch and to learn how to be a normal chicken. This is also why I have 3 rescued dogs... but that is another story.... Wow... Just really happy for you and those girls. Good luck and please send us pics and updates....
JTbass.... I have to tell you a story ;) I have a new cell phone... Can you already guess were this is leading? Yup...But I knew there was an egg in that pocket. I took off my sweatshirt and carefully placed it on a chair... so I would not disturb either one... I came back and looked at my cell for the time... Egg all over it. I cleaned it up really well. But I guess some yoke got into the speakers and no one could hear me when I talked. Made for a very funny story when I went to the Cell phone store

Hello,

I have ten 7 month-old pullets that are laying well, a 5 EEs, a Red, two Partridge Rocks and two mixed breeds. I just recently added a feather-footed bantam and what looks like a Barred Rock. (Thank you Craigslist!) The lady that sold them to me said that they were hatched in July and August. The Barred Rock has a comb that is red, but only about half the size it should be for laying. And the banty, I almost need a magnifyng glass to see her adorable comb! The banty escaped the run and I had a fun week chasing her around and trying to get herl to stop roosting in the neighbor's trees.
