My Australorp started squatting today!!!

I collected the chickens from my friend I couldn't believe what I saw when I arrived at his place. He has 580 laying hens the conditions are terrible 4 hens in an area of 1 square foot just eating and laying I don't think they can sleep, most of the hens have very little feathers. I arrived home and introduced them to their new coop they seemed to be very disorientated they didn't know what to do they scratched in the wood shavings on the floor and layed in it as if they were taking a bath. I checked them after dark an they were standing around didn't know what the perches were for so I take it the slept on the floor. went out this morning and found 1 egg on the floor so it will take time for them to realize what the laying boxes are for if ever.

Yay!!! Celebration time. It could take a while still, but it will be soon.

I got my first egg!! It was amazing to open the coop door and see that precious gift for Christmas. I think it must have been my RIR, since she started squatting last weekend!! I started yelling "it's a Christmas egg!" and ran into the house to tell my husband and sons, who happen to be here for Christmas. One on my son's said " Don't have a heart attack mom!" What a joy. I need more chickens!! Thank you Jesus and Merry Christmas!!

I've had them now for 5 days and only one is not looking good healthwise, i'm treating her maybe she will be ok. They are very happy with the freedom and the new home.

My pullets are BA's, Delawares, Blue Andalusians, Dark Cornish, Brown Leghorns and Silver Laced Wyandottes.

One of the Black Australorps is getting really red in the comb and wattles, but I don't expect anything for weeks yet. I could be surprised though.

I'll definitely keep posting here. I love this thread!
