Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

You are not alone! This thread is full of folks waiting on EEs to start laying, including me!  I have a mixed flock of Ameraucanas and EEs. Some hatched April 21, and the other 3 weeks later on May 12. I got my very first EE egg yesterday from one of the May birds. None of the others have started laying yet.  EEs and Ameraucanas are notorious for starting late. There's really nothing you can do but make sure their getting adequate nutrition and water, and then just wait. If one has started though, then the others are sure to follow soon!

Actually that is a comfort to hear. I didn't know EEs were slow to lay. We thought it was something we were doing wrong. That makes me not want any more EEs. Do you think they will ALL lay brownish eggs? I got them for colorful eggs! grrr

I spoke with an old farmer and he suggested giving my hens Turkey feed. He said the higher protein might help them lay. Anyone else heard of this? Is it worth a try? What can I get a small bag? AND how would I know they laid because of the feed since my one girl just started laying?

look up www.baxterbarn.com
that's where I was getting my chickens from and he's telling me that at 17 to 18 percent protein is for better laying usual feed is only runs about 16 percent. I'll look for the paper he gave me and see if I can copy it for you guys when I get home

I would be very surprised if they all laid brown eggs. All the EEs I've had have laid various shades of green, but I know they can lay just about any color, even pink or purple.

BrynansM,,

Great advice from Nastyk, debbie_n, and Brooster.. Too much protein can cause major problems with you girls. It really is only generally recommended to go to the higher % when your flock is in a molt, in heavy winter for a while, or if you are trying to bring a neglected flock back to health. Too much protein causes conditions previously mentioned, but also is a big cause for gout in chickens, more commenly reffered to in the chicken world as bumblefoot. This is a painful condition that causes lameness and inflamation in one or both feet, and also generally needs to be cut out before a chicken can heal from it. So protein Beware! As long as you are feeding a balanced flock grower, or layer feed your chickens are getting all the protein they need. You can scramble some eggs, feed some mealworms, or spread out some BOSS for extra protein on an occasional basis.

Easter Eggers to my knowledge don't lay brown eggs, or even pink for that matter. Maybe go over to the breed forum, and find an EE thread in there, and post your pictures. Everyone is so helpful when I run over to the breed threads to try and figure things out.

I know they will settle down in a few days after they get use to me as thier new mama. Will post pic of them on the weekend.

Just wanted to show you what Cory was saying about his feed. I had the website wrong. www.baxterbarn.org

The second link is his explanation of protein. I don't think he took it that much higher then normal. This is all I've been feeding my girls, still haven't started them on layer feed, still giving them the grower feed. Eggs are very nice shells :) Just offering the info is all. Have a great day all! Happy eggs!

I got 2 eggs again today. My EE Greta is on her 3 egg! Things are starting to look up egg wise, I hope.
My EE that looks just like your Greta laid her 2nd egg today! Things are definitely looking up egg-wise.
