Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

At my feed store it suggested that I give turkey mash to the chicks. Even with this my girls were still looking for even more protein. I even gave them black seeds, meal worms and sometimes some cat food. The girls still would still pluck feathers to eat... That is a sign that they wanted more protein. After 10 to 12 weeks I switched to laying mash. They still get some of the other treats. All my girls look healthy and they started laying about a month before my friend's who had the same breed birds from the same place. But she feed chick starter mash. I guess it all depends... my girls seemed to really want that extra protein... my friend said that she did not notice that with her girls (the feather plucking) but she does not watch them as much as we do so she was not sure.
I will keep an eye on the new girls... I don't want to endanger their health but my girls do look very good compared to my friends birds. And I did not keep them on it all the time.Maybe that was it... when I switched them off the Turkey mash to the lower protein they missed the high protein...

CatSol they should be just fine. It has to be a fairly high amount of protein. Like a high protein feed with lots of extra protein treats. I was feeding mine a 20% protein over their molt.

Thanks Naktk...I am relieved. They like their treats but like anything we like to eat... only in moderation.
Yahhh... Omaeve... wow... 3 eggs the first day out. Congrats.

This is my 100 post. I had to put up something special for that.... here are both of my Cuckoo Marans...

The are just enough different for names. Tabatha on the left and Dotty on the right. I have been very lucky that my girls have been just different enough... Still got a long wait on them. They are only 8 weeks old. At least another 3 or 4 months more... sounds like forever...

Nah, that isn't long at all,, we'll all wait with you, what else are we good at... waiting, waiting, waiting! lol..

Congratulations on the 100th post! Before you know it, you'll double that!

Love the pictures of the girls. Those little pullet faces.. adorable. I had another 6 egg day, we got four inches of snow today, but on the other hand, temps stayed up around 28-30 all day, who knew that 30 degrees would feel downright balmy!

Hey Guys and Gals, I need some help! I went out to let the girls out this morning and found Lemon with a bare patch on her neck. Appears to be eating and drinking fine and acting normal. I don't know when it happened but I don't remember seeing it yesterday. Should I do anything for her? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Red

Aww! Poor Lemon! She sure is a pretty girl, even with the bald spot!

If the skin is broken, you can treat it with peroxide or betadine. Then just keep an eye on it. If it's just missing feathers, probably nothing to be concerned about. Is it possible she's being bullied? I've had chickens that like to pluck the fancy feathers off of an EE or the top of a Polish chicken. It doesn't look like something a rooster would do. Maybe she got her beard caught on something?
