Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Hey Guys, I am a little worried about Lemon. I read a few things about her bare spot by her neck and some lead me to lice or mites. I tried checking her out tonight and I don't think I saw anything to be concerned with in regards to lice or mites. Upon checking her out it seems her vent may be large. Now I don't know what a normal vent looks like but when I raise her tale her vent is real visible while when I raise all the others I have to separate their feathers to see the vent area. Lemon laid her first egg on 1/13, she also laid on 1/14, 1/16 and 1/19. She has not laid since then. She is eating as usual, poop seems fine and is otherwise acting normal. Maybe as a first time chicken owner I am looking to much into this, but she is my youngest daughters favorite(obvious from my avatar) and I would hate to see something happen to her. Any thoughts would be appreciated and I can get pics if that will help.

Red,

If you had lice or mites, they would all have it, they don't just affect one bird, it spreads through the whole flock, so keep an open eye on it. Having some wood ash, as in ashes from a burn pile or fireplace is a wonderful deterrent to lice and mites, and if indeed you do suspect they have them, dusting their feathers in a large tub will start to erradicate them from your birds.

As far as her vent, is there any discharge? That does seem odd about not laying for 10 days.. Let us know how it's going. I'm trying to find a link to an excellent article I saved on egg bound, it had lots of info. Just as someone just said above,,, if she is eating, drinking, acting fine, and bms are normal... I'd just keep a watch on her.

This is what I've been waiting for - 4 eggs from 4 girls. I have only had this twice before and today's egg from the RIR is special - purple specks!!! It's not a great photo, though.

The white one is from Sylvia the Silver Campine. Going clockwise is from Ladybird the RIR. Next is Barnie the Barnevelder (looks like I'll only be getting dark brown speckled eggs from her, not dark all over). Finally, from Beetle the Australorp.

Spike the cat (see user name) came to inspect the produce. He prefers his scrambled....

The fun continues - before I was waiting for an egg.... any egg will do..... now I hope for 4-egg days whilst it is still summer.

Congrats Spikes!!!

Thanks for the info guys. I will continue to monitor her and keep you posted. Please let me know if you think of anything else I should be looking for.

MB, I have not seem any discharge, there are a few feathers that are a little crusty but I assume that maybe this could be from mating??

I never heard of purple speckles. Congrats on your 4 egg day. :)

Lots of different breeds start out chipmunk looking. It will be exciting to see what you have USVIyardbard.
This is one of my Speckled Sussex

They do look so much the same. I am gonna try get a pic of their mama today. Maybe that will help. Looking forward to going home and handling them so they can get acquainted with me.

Katrina, WOO HOO! What a large white egg that is! Now I'm excited about white eggs! I usually associate that color with store eggs, but yours looks beautiful as if Snow White laid it!

Congrats girl!

Morning Red,
If she had bad dishcarge, you'd know, and smell it! Is she acting normal, eating and drinking? Keep us posted!

Good Morning everyone, nothing like that first cup of coffee while I sit and catch up on all my threads!

Who knew 36 degrees could feel so warm and balmy!

Agreed. I'm especially loving my coffee on this rainy, windy day, sitting next to the brooder watching the baby chicks

I discovered something delicious last night. Those farm fresh eggs make the BEST shortbread! Bright yellow yolks make it rich and golden.

Yes, I'm having cookies for breakfast.

Where do you find these hilarious emoticons! We are actually under a tornado watch.

Lemon Shortbread recipe:
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
3 tbsp lemon peel
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups flour

Beat together butter and sugar. Mix in egg, lemon peel, lemon juice, and salt. Mix in 1/2 off the flour, then the other half. Squish dough together into a big ball. Roll into 1 inch balls, flatten with palm, place on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

I also like to make an indention in each cookie with my thumb, and fill it with a drop of fresh preserves before baking. I filled this batch with grapefruit marmalade.
