Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Hi Tam. So sorry about your birds to. Its a horrible thing to happen. I have always believed in taking good care of dogs and keeping them to the property. There are so many people who think it is OK for them to go run around on their own. They form up packs at night and as a friend of my says, 'behave worse then teenage boys on drugs.' Add in the people who think it is better to abandon a dog then to turn it into a shelter.... Anyway. I understand...
Sorry I have been out of the loop... a friend came over so we could deal with my pig. I now have ham and bacon curing away in my fridge... just hoping maybe I will get a few eggs from my girls. And today I have hope...
I still keep the girls inside for the night. This morning I heard some real egg song. I think she was just wanted out.... but until now I have only heard a few cluck and squawks. Not the real song. I have at least 2 weeks before the ham and bacon is cured and I can smoke them... maybe by then.... maybe.. I will be freezing most of the meat anyway. It can wait till the girls are ready.
Spike your girls look amazing. Loved the pics.
Oh and I remember a long time ago a friend of mine used to use duck eggs for baking. He would make the most amazing cakes from scratch using duck eggs. The cakes came out way more moist and rich. I have had turkey eggs over easy for breakfast once... way richer then a chicken egg but we liked them. My turkey hen is healing and starting to eat. Maybe in the spring she might lay for us.
600 eggs... wow. It will take forever for me to get there with so few chickens. I wonder how many birds they had?
And congrats on eggs. I am eggcited for everyone...

Beautiful Eggs Gatsby's Girl!

I'm way envious!!! What breed of chicken laid these for you? How old are they?

Thanks for posting and joining! So glad to have you!

Thanks so much!

I have 5 red star hens right now. They are 8 months at the moment. Am going to be hatching some Wyandottes and Speckled sussex in the spring hopefully. I love my girls and am happy they are finally starting to lay consistently.

Spikes I love your last chicken, one of my EE girls look like her. That is one thing I love about the EE, usually every hen has a different look to them.

I was so eggcited on Sunday I got 7 eggs, that is the most I have ever found in one day. I am looking forward to the day that all 14 of my hens are giving me an egg.

Does anyone know if a chicken will change it's egg color? My first 2 eggs were this orange/pink speckled egg, but all my eggs since then have been various shades of green and blue. It has been 3 weeks since the first eggs were laid.

Sol I know, I always keep my dogs contained. I have a neighbor (the neighbor who's dogs got my first girls) tell me I should let my dogs run. I just don't think it is right to let them wander the planet bothering other people. My big dog is actually the pup of an abandoned dog. What is worse is around here the animal control wont come get the dogs without charging you to take them. That is exciting on the pig, we are thinking of getting into pigs too when we have our property a little more contained.

I had a pot belly pig when I was younger! he lived in the house with us (he was potty trained) didn't seem weird then

I had to give him away though because he could lift our gate right off the hinges and he almost went in the neighbors house once.

Oh and once he found a bag of Brownie mix when we were gone and there was brown powder EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!

That is so lovely. I wish you all the very best during the Holiday Season too.

Here's something else you might all look forward to - the first normal sized egg. For about 2 weeks since they started laying I have generally got 2 eggs but they are small, pullet-sized ones. About 38-40g in weight. Then yesterday nothing, nada, zip. I wondered if my girls were on strike!

Today - two normal sized eggs, both around 62g in weight. Who knows, maybe their bodies needed to take a break to get ready for proper sized eggs. I thought it was sweet that the Australorp and the RIR are so in sync it is all happening at the same time for them. The Barnevelder laid one egg 10 days ago and hasn't repeated the experience since! Still waiting for the Silver Campine of course.

Always something to wait for - Not just Christmas presents!

Spikes,

That is awesome,, yes, just like high school, they are cycling together! lol.... remember that?

Anyway...(haha), Thank you for the interesting observation. I have wondered if I will get small one first. I have a BA and a RIR both with large comb and red waddles... so far.. nothing else.

Crafty Duck...love those cards... what is the program you use again?

Very cold tonight up here,, about 23 when I gave late night hay..

When my two layers first started laying they did lay small eggs! and my RIR lays the occasional HUGE double yolker which is common with new layers.

MB - The program is Picmonkey.com really easy to use and fun

Happy 12-12-12... May the good luck of this day find every one.

Wonderful card Crafty.

The pig was a lot more work then we thought. She was supposed to go into the freezer at about 9 months. But since she was alone after the first few weeks... (we had a party with the big pig) she had no competition. So she did not gain the weight that we wanted. At over a year old she was just a little over 200 lbs. My suggestion is to get at least 2 pigs. The meat is great when you raise it yourself. I will let you know how the ham and bacon come out.

I have been reading the threads about Americanas, Auricanas and EEs... I am still a little confused about them. I got my girls from Murray McMurray and they called my girls Americanas/Auricanas. But from what I have been reading I guess mine are Americanas. My girls seem to have settled down.. though they do get uneasy when I leave them too long in the Avery. I still bring them in at night. I will let them run around a little bit inside but not much... they can be messy. I will find it very funny if they lay their first eggs in my room. My favorite color is blue but I guess I will be happy what ever color they turn out to be. I have not heard about them changing their egg color... but it must make it even more of a surprise when you find them. It would be a wonderful Christmas or Solstice gift from the chickens to get an egg.
