Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Well he's a very pretty bad boy

I've had several mean roos. Some I've been able to tame. I usually carry them around upside down for 15 minutes or so. After a few times of doing this, they learn you're the dominant roo. When that doesn't work, they occasionally end up in the stew pot. That's usually a last measure for me, and only if I'm worried about him attacking my daughter...which has happened. One rooster in particular was an egg she had hatched. She named him Buttercup...yeah...Buttercup. They were best buds until he hit puberty. He was the meanest rooster ever. I tried everything to get him to stop attacking her, but nothing worked. RIP Buttercup.
ROFL.

So, I've got the 5 chickens that are all about the same age (hatched in late August). I just added two 8 week old pullets. that was sure interesting, but things seem to be settling down now. the problem is that everyone seems to want to hang out in the nesting boxes.

Actually all of them in ONE nesting box. 0_o

It's like they are fricking folding space or something. Seven birds in ONE nesting box? How do they even *do* that? It looks a bit like a Escher drawing of a chicken with a foot coming out of a head that has 5 eyes.

I never though about putting doors on the nesting boxes. Does that help with laying?

The first three days, the eggs I got were all in the same nest box. I have heard this is quite common. I have 6, and they all seem interested in just that one. I have found one of my RIR sleeping in box #1. There is now poo in it.. where there never was before. I think the poster that mentioned working on the door meant to open it from behind, to see who was laying. Could be wrong,, but that is what I thought she meant. I've seen some nest boxes more closed than others... maybe they might like the privacy My flock was a July 23rd hatch, and one just started. You probably have a few more weeks... Good Luck! What breeds do you have leslie?

Hi there. Just got us a new batch of girls today :) A few of them should be laying already? I was given (They have different b-days but have always been pinned together) 1 Wellsummer 8/13. 1 Austrolorp 7/25. 1 Road Island Red 8/8. 1 Dominique 8/8. 1 Gold sexlink and 1 Buff 9/19. Guess I'll wait for tomorrow to see? Put them in their new coop and they are all sleeping together on the floor? This is a first to me?

Hi debbie_nibbles!

Happy to have you here, and welcome! Sounds like a nice flock there, perhaps your Austrolorp or your RIR will be first. Have you had chickens before? This is my first time with them, and just got my first egg 5 days ago, have had one a day since. I have 9 girls, but think onlyl one is laying, which I found out today is my red sex link. Maybe the sleeping on the floor is just cuddling together in new surroundings. did they have perches where they were before?

If you can post some pictures, we love pics!

Cheers!

Don't be too disappointed if you don't find an egg for the first week or so. They all need time to adjust to their new surroundings. By your dates that puts the oldest the Austrolorp at 23 weeks 2 days that's about POL. But as a fellow Washingtonian I know these short and mostly cloudy days are not helping speed along the laying process. Join the waiting club. If they have roosts in their coop once one finds it the rest will follow, they are just trying to get used to the new house.

MB, my girls were 22 weeks on the first. I also think only one is laying right now as well. I have also been hearing alot of noise coming from the pen this morning. Much different than normal activities a week ago before we went on vacation. I have all the doors and windows open in the house this morning waiting to here the song so I can see who the singer is.

Hi there, This is my 3rd batch :) I will be doing pics today. Letting them get settled. The guy I got them from is really into his girls LOL Said to leave them in the coop for a month before I let them out in the run? I have always let them have at it once they were full feathered. He said to help them get over the shock. Will keep all posted! Good thing the coop is 4x8. Just finishing up the new coop too LOL Almost should of waited 1 more week before we got the girls.

Apparently I have I silent layer! I have been listening and checking about every fifteen minutes and someone slipped on in between visits, laid and left without a peep. I asked them all and still no one is confessing. Oh well maybe tomorrow. I did weigh the eggs and they range between 48.5 and 50.7 grams so they still remain in the small classification.
