Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Finished 95% of the coop. Let them out for the first time today :) Soooo eggcited! 2 of my girls squatted for me YAY!!! But had to put them away manually LOL Poor things were huddled together in the corner, now safe and sound inside. Eggs soon I hope! I would love info on putting a live cam in the coop :) I need all the info I can get though, camera I need, do I need to run wire out to the coop? Or can I do wireless? I do have signal at the coop. I see info in places on here but I think there's a few of us who would like a dummy version

Hope all have a good night

There's the egg and my very proud daughter. :)
It's almost as big as my large store eggs. It weighed in at 2 oz.
Banana,, I forgot to congratulate you on your egg, and tell you how I love the pic!! What a sweetie, wheetie holding that egg so proud! What did you guys do with it? Was it good eats, or are we still adoring it on your kitchen counter? lol...

I gave my first 6 eggs today to our neighbor who owns the house next door. They come up from NYC for quiet weekends. I hated to give them up, but they are so tolerant of the flock wandering into their yard, and picking away at all the bugs there. They also have made quite a few dusting holes in their shrub bed... geez....

They were so tickled to get those eggs, caught them right before they were going to make breakfast. Feels good to give the product of 5 months of hoping and waiting, and raising my little flock. I hope to give many more away in the future.

Way to go debbie! Any pics?

I was wondering about the live cam myself. Go to the forum and google "hencam". I was reading around last night about it. I don't have electric out in my coop/run. I would have to run extenstion cords. I hate that. I want to look into more. Let me know if you figure anything out. I will ask a neighbor tomorrow who has one.

I remember the first night I put my chickies in the new coop. I was so happy. Such great stuff!

Thanks everyone! :)

We checked the nest boxes several times today and didn't find any new eggs. The plastic Easter egg was moved around this morning and the pine shavings were all heaped up on one side, but I didn't see an egg. I didn't let them out until around noon because I was expecting an egg in the morning and I wanted to be sure she layed it in the nest box and not under the hedge somewhere. Then the kids and I went out for the afternoon and didn't get back until after dark. We went for an egg hunt under the hedge with flashlights and didn't see anything. So we went to lock up the coop and check the nest boxes one more time. There was the plastic egg, but no new brown egg. My daughter was a little disappointed. Then as I was closing up the egg door on the coop, my son started poking his flashlight around in the pine shavings (because he's two

) and uncovered a beautiful brown egg that had been buried. They were so excited to have another one!

It's been cold and sunny here the past few days. It got down into the low 20's last night with a high today of maybe 40. The eggs have been cold when we've found them, but not frozen so I don't think they've been sitting overnight. I just need to look a little harder in the morning to see if I can find one a little earlier while it's still warm.

what sort of camera do you have, and does is withhold in cold weather, or do you just put it out at 'that time of day' ?
i would love to do a video...song and all! :)
i tried to peek at your pix, but i was denied access  boo!

I'm not sure why you were denied access? Is there some sort of privacy setting I need to mess with?

So here is the camera I use:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007MX0IPK/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00

It's a wildlife camera. It doesn't have wireless access, and can't be streamed live. It does also take video, but there's no sound. You won't find many pictures from it in my profile, because I only put it in my coop a couple of days ago. I got it because a mysterious predator was taking my chickens. They were literally vanishing without a trace...no feathers or blood, no holes in the coop. We were baffled. So I got the cam, mounted it on a tree outside the coop, and mystery solved...a pack of raccoons had made a very discreet hole in the roof, above my nesting boxes where I couldn't see it. They had pulled the hardware cloth away from the wood, and it was snapping back into place after they left. Smart animals. I'm not sure I ever would have figured it out if it weren't for the camera. Now I use it to watch wildlife in the yard. It's a fun thing to have! There are some interesting wildlife camera threads here on BYC.

The camera is completely weatherproof. It runs on AA batteries. The cold weather does run the batteries down a little faster, so it's better to use rechargeable batteries. It comes with little bungee cords for mounting, so it's really easy to move around to different locations. It uses an SD card which is nice, so I don't have to take the camera down to get the pictures. I'm having fun using it to watch my chickens. I'm at work, but I'll try to post some of the pictures when I get home.

I just went out to check on the chicks and could not find my rooster! All the chicks we in the run except for him. Took a quick glance in the coop and see nothing and I am now wondering what has happened! As i am walking away from the coop I hear him cooing or making the noise to call over the girls and it sounded very muffled. Thinking he got out, I start looking in the adjacent woods with no success. Heard the noise again and it sounded like it was coming from the coop. I opened the door one more time and he was sitting ever so quietly in the nest box. This explains why I did not see him the first time because I would have never thought to look for him in there. Now I am thoroughly confused, or perhaps he is the confused one, I am not sure. Has anyone every had this kind of activity before? He eventually hopped out after a few minutes of me asking why he was in there but left me with even more questions about these strange creatures.

I have now decided that may chickens are here to merely confuse the heck out of me! Yesterday I had several egg songs, would go outside and check only to find them all by the run door expecting treats. So I now think they are doing the egg song just to get me over to the coop with something for them. I didn't think they were this smart but they are proving me wrong.

Maybe he is more smart than we think, and he's showing those girls what the heck they should be doing! I have read many accounts of very smart roosters. Even he knows they should stop the playing around, get in the nest box, and give the human thing some satisfaction or they will all end up in the stew pot!

Give him a treat if you ask me!

So here's a picture from the camera this morning. The camera caught Irlene climbing in and out of the nesting box all morning, and when my Jersey Giant sat down to lay an egg, Irlene would not leave her alone. Maybe she has egg envy. I feel like she's going to lay any day now.

Love it! I would say so too! Pretty mama bird laying her egg. Can't a girl get a little privacy? Funny, wouldn't it be funny having your best friend come in and ask.."are you ovulating, huh, huh?" every time it was your time of the month. HA Ha HA..they are all too funny.

By the way.. I visited your knitting website. The things you create are so unique, beautiful and interesting. NOT your grandmother's knitting projects anymore! Love it!

Hahaha! I know right? No privacy at all! No wonder it takes her an hour and a half to lay an egg. That Jersey Giant is such a sweet bird. I'd like to get more. She was a bonus egg that came randomly with eggs I ordered last May. She has the fluffiest butt I have ever seen on a chicken. She's bigger than my rooster too.

And thanks in regards to the knitting! That's what I do for a living. Well mostly I sit with my needles in my lap, and stare out the window at the chicken coop. I should probably get back to work right now!
