Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

The new girls. RIRs

They look a little darker here... It feels like it has been so long since I had chicks.

This is Tabatha. She is one of the cuckoo muran, 8 weeks old. Dotty is darker.

This is Amber. She will be 12 weeks this week. She is a gold star. That is Matilda in the background. one of my Americanas.

Nice birds Melabella. That is something to look into for next time. Those eggs you showed... That is why I wanted a Muran.... That deep color is great. What kind of horses do you have? I have a young mare... 4 yr old quarter horse. When she was in the near by pen I picked up a bird free-ranging and took it to her. It was kind of funny. When Matilda seen a horse for the first time she flapped her wings. That spooked my mare. But she came right back to sniff the bird. Flap again and a jump back... then right back to the fence... Then they both seemed to calm down. But that is why I did that... So she wouldn't spook around the girls later. I had her since she was a 2 yr old and I try to desensitize her to anything I can think of. But I know not all horses are the same and have different personalities, especially depending on the breed.
I will try to get a pic of the cement with the stones in it tomorrow. Katrina love the coop and run you have. I would be embarrassed to show mine in a long shot. But I do have chairs and benches near our run as well. Though sometimes I just like to sit on the inside and have one of the girls sit on my lap.

Those pics are not my birds... just wanted to show you what one looked like. They lay those crazy dark eggs, so perhaps not. I have one other guess, I'm going to look for pics. Sex links are a mix type chicken, but that brown around her neck is confusing. Where did you get them from again? Maybe they are black sex links of some kind. What color legs does she have, as I think Marans have black legs.
They are very very pretty girls, the picture of health!

Our Welsummer is laying dark eggs, the above looks like a black sexlink. Love the dark colored eggs!

oscar seems like the perfect name! or courtney!(love)

MB, you'll be up to 1ooo posts in no time!

speaking of mystery eggs...
here are my two laying ladies, when we bought the six we were unclear as to what they were. then we thought we knew. then we didn't. then maybe. then no.
so, here we go (rather than me babbling i will just bombard with pictures of my glamour girls) What are they?
a photo-ode to my laying ladies:

mika on the left, paulaR on the right ;)

i am also wondering if you can tell from their chick pics. and why do some chicks have no tail feathers!?

^^^ mika

paulARyan before she was RED faced ...the other pics are today

Mika looks like a BCM to me too. Paularyan looks like an Australorp? Australorps are great birds, really good layers. Just my guesses.

Only think is, if she was a BCM, Celia would have those dark chocolate eggs. I think debbie is correct in saying she is probably a sex link. Don't think she has black legs either. I think you are right that Paula is a BA. I LOVE my BA girls, and am considering getting a BA roo to replace Duke if he doesn't stop with his antics.....

Good point. I didn't read carefully. I don't know much about sex links. I'm actually thinking of using these chicks to hatch some sex link Marans...BCM over Golden Cuckoo Maran.
The very first chicken I raised from hatch to laying was an Australorp. She was a great chicken.

It's kind of shocking how many chickens we lost to predators in the last year, to everything from hawks and bobcats to raccoons and weasels. We're in a terrible spot for predators here on the river. It's taken me a while and a lot of hard work to predator-proof my coop and run. That's why despite having chickens for a few years now, I don't have any older layers at this point. But we haven't lost a chicken in more than 5 months, so I think I've finally figured it out.

Sitting at work looking at the time. Is it not 3pm yet?

I was thinking a black star as well. ... A friend of mine has one. It also has that sheen to the feathers. Beautiful colors... I think I would have chosen a black star over the other stars if I had a choice at that time. I love that metallic sheen of blues and greens.
