Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Yayyyy! My first egg (the little brown one). I just bought 1-1/2 doz eggs at the store because I was out. I guess that was the charm.

Cograts KnobbyOaks!!! 1st egg!!! They're so stinkin cute that small!

I set a batch of 24 green and blue eggs today. They look so pretty all collected together...so many shades of green depending on who's paint bucket is on full blast. I really love having EEs.

Our weather is so nice today. It's in the upper 50s, and last night was mild. The little ones have been playing outside the coop all day, and this morning I sat in a lawn chair, drinking my coffee, and watched them for an hour. I can't wait for spring to really set in.
Love the colors... wow. I want more EE or Amercaunas... That dark green on the bottom is stunning. My eggs seem so pale in comparison.... And kind of grayish... Is there anything we can do for the colors to be stronger? I know that as they continue to lay the color gets lighter... Or is that something that happens after they molt for the first time...?

That usually does the trick, alright! Congrats on your first egg!
Seriously, she laid it while I was at the grocery store. Bah. Oh well, this way I'll have something to compare the taste to. Now I'll looking everywhere wondering if one of the other girls laid one someplace other than the coop. This one wasn't laid in the nest box but in what I call a loft.

Fabulous! And such pretty eggs, too. Who layed the dark one....some kind of marans?
HI theotherfoote, you know, ,those dark eggs are from my red sex link hatchery birds! Some days they are so dark with some speckles. They also give me ex-large/jumbo size every time. I have been meaning to ask Meyer Hatchery on their Facebook page what they use to cross their red sex links. Leghorns, and maybe RIR? who knows. They also lay every day, 6 out of 7 days a week, I can see why Meyer say it's their biggest seller, and it will be interesting to see how long they last. From what I have read on here, only about 2 years, then they burn out. Oh what to do then! I will tell you, one of them is such a pip, and so friendly, until Duke calls her away. I think she will get to stay on as a forever pet. Plainest brown rapper, but those huge eggs she lays are something else.

Oh my Heavens Brooster, they are stupendous!! I ADORE them. I must get me some of those for my next flock. Where did you get your EE's from if you don't mind me asking? Can you sell me some of those hatching eggs if I ever get up the nerve to try and incubate some? Also, I've been meaning to ask what kind of incubator you use. Now we are going to have our own little "Egg waiting group hatch a long with Brooster" thread! You HAVE to keep daily updates on this hatch, we can wait along with ya!
Love the color of those eggs, I want EEs too....i want, i want, i want, I need a much LARGER coop for my wish list. Nice eggs MB, that little tiny one is about the size that my Partridge Plymouth has been laying---I still eat them, full of yolk, not a lot of white, very tasty just the same. :) Haven't seen the sun in days----- ugh but it has gotten up to the 30s today and last night it stayed around 32 so the girls had a much warmer night and for once, no frozen water this morning. Lots of ice over the snow as well, isn't melting fast enough.
kdawg, same same here. So dismal, and dangerous out there. Please be careful on the ice covered snow. You all have to see me walking like an 80 year old woman, 2 inch baby steps, fear of falling yet again! I am so sick of this weather.... 6 days of slushy rain in the forecast too! Those little eggs are hysterical, I expected the yolk to be tiny, but just as you say, it was normal size with hardly any white. very funny!

Oh my goodness Knobby,,On that adorable first egg! Of course she was waiting for you to go to the grocery, just so she could give you that suprise.

Just wait until you taste the difference. I must admit, I thought I wouldn't be able to taste much difference, and just feel good that I knew they were fresh, and also eggs from well fed chickens, but i have to tell you, they truly taste superb! I don't think I could ever go back to eggs from the grocery if I didn't have to!

Do you have any idea which girl laid it?

Such great news on the day! to everyone!

MB

Still patiently waiting here and living vicariously through all of you

Last Sunday I heard the very distinct Egg Song and have been checking
daily. Nada.

I have been giving some extra treats to sweeten the deal and they are not
falling for it. They eat the treats and strut away mocking me.

I called the local feed store for advice and they told me it will be any time now and that it is likely time to
change to layer feed. I thought I had to wait till they start laying. So off I
went to buy a 50lb bag of layer crumble and started mixing it in with their food today. I also
bought them some "snax" as yet another bribe. My first egg is probably going to cost me $50.00!
I told my girls that I'm feeling that our relationship is really one sided and I think they are being selfish. They didn't care.

They are now, Australorp = 23 weeks (she is the singer)
Easter Egger = 22 weeks and Rhode Island Red =20 weeks.

OK - now I'll stop whining. I know it will happen and I will be thrilled when it does. Sending those of you on the
East Coast and Middle America springtime wishes. The saving grace is that I am able to be in my yard planting and
pruning. Some of my trees are already budding. That's enough to keep me sane for now

I read these posts and sometimes think you guys are magical...
How in the world do you know which hen laid which egg????? I'm sure I'll know when the ameracauna lays, but all my other hens are brown egg layers. Please share your magical knowledge...my girls are just past 4 months and I'll be needing to know soon. And tell me about the egg song!

I was able to tell because when they first started laying they would spend a fair amount of time in the nest box. I would look out at my chickens (who free-range in my back yard when I'm home) and see that there were only 3, then have a quick panic right before stealthily peaking in the nest box. Now that they've started laying regularly, I can tell by the shade of brown on the egg who layed it. It does help to have different breeds so the eggs are slightly different.

The egg song is the sound they make after (or sometimes before) they lay an egg. I've only heard two of my girls do it. Either I'm not home when it happens or they're really quiet hens. If you go to YouTube and search for 'egg song' you can hear what it sounds like.
