Love the colors... wow. I want more EE or Amercaunas... That dark green on the bottom is stunning. My eggs seem so pale in comparison.... And kind of grayish... Is there anything we can do for the colors to be stronger? I know that as they continue to lay the color gets lighter... Or is that something that happens after they molt for the first time...?I set a batch of 24 green and blue eggs today. They look so pretty all collected together...so many shades of green depending on who's paint bucket is on full blast. I really love having EEs.
Our weather is so nice today. It's in the upper 50s, and last night was mild. The little ones have been playing outside the coop all day, and this morning I sat in a lawn chair, drinking my coffee, and watched them for an hour. I can't wait for spring to really set in.
Seriously, she laid it while I was at the grocery store. Bah. Oh well, this way I'll have something to compare the taste to. Now I'll looking everywhere wondering if one of the other girls laid one someplace other than the coop. This one wasn't laid in the nest box but in what I call a loft. That usually does the trick, alright! Congrats on your first egg!
HI theotherfoote, you know, ,those dark eggs are from my red sex link hatchery birds! Some days they are so dark with some speckles. They also give me ex-large/jumbo size every time. I have been meaning to ask Meyer Hatchery on their Facebook page what they use to cross their red sex links. Leghorns, and maybe RIR? who knows. They also lay every day, 6 out of 7 days a week, I can see why Meyer say it's their biggest seller, and it will be interesting to see how long they last. From what I have read on here, only about 2 years, then they burn out. Oh what to do then! I will tell you, one of them is such a pip, and so friendly, until Duke calls her away. I think she will get to stay on as a forever pet. Plainest brown rapper, but those huge eggs she lays are something else.Fabulous! And such pretty eggs, too. Who layed the dark one....some kind of marans?
Oh my Heavens Brooster, they are stupendous!! I ADORE them. I must get me some of those for my next flock. Where did you get your EE's from if you don't mind me asking? Can you sell me some of those hatching eggs if I ever get up the nerve to try and incubate some? Also, I've been meaning to ask what kind of incubator you use. Now we are going to have our own little "Egg waiting group hatch a long with Brooster" thread! You HAVE to keep daily updates on this hatch, we can wait along with ya!I set a batch of 24 green and blue eggs today. kdawg, same same here. So dismal, and dangerous out there. Please be careful on the ice covered snow. You all have to see me walking like an 80 year old woman, 2 inch baby steps, fear of falling yet again! I am so sick of this weather.... 6 days of slushy rain in the forecast too! Those little eggs are hysterical, I expected the yolk to be tiny, but just as you say, it was normal size with hardly any white. very funny!Love the color of those eggs, I want EEs too....i want, i want, i want, I need a much LARGER coop for my wish list. Nice eggs MB, that little tiny one is about the size that my Partridge Plymouth has been laying---I still eat them, full of yolk, not a lot of white, very tasty just the same.Haven't seen the sun in days----- ugh but it has gotten up to the 30s today and last night it stayed around 32 so the girls had a much warmer night and for once, no frozen water this morning. Lots of ice over the snow as well, isn't melting fast enough.
Oh my goodness Knobby,,
I read these posts and sometimes think you guys are magical...
How in the world do you know which hen laid which egg????? I'm sure I'll know when the ameracauna lays, but all my other hens are brown egg layers. Please share your magical knowledge...my girls are just past 4 months and I'll be needing to know soon. And tell me about the egg song!
