Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Hi - Don't feel bad! People browse but eventually will find you as I did! Well I just became a proud gramma of 5 new eggs! My husband and I are first time chicken owners! We have 10 sex link pullets that were born April 1 of this year... Last weekend, a couple hens started laying but the shells were not hard. Then yesterday I heard their "announcements" and alas 5 perfect eggs! I am very surprised because I think they are pretty young to start producing... But, they have been free ranging for over a month now and I think that helps with their maturation and growth.

It was very exciting to find them! Now to get them to lay in their boxes! I need to get golf balls or fake eggs...

My sweet White Leghorn is still doing a perfect job. She has now laid four days in a row. The process is so funny, she screams off and on and goes in and out of the coop for about an hour prior to laying but each day they are slightly bigger than the last. I wish I had some way to weigh them. I also have four others, 3 that are almost 18 weeks old and one that is 16 weeks. My 18wk BO is showing some signs but what I've read says she won't lay until around 20 weeks. You'll all be the first to know, but my egg wait continues.
Congrats....only more to come!!!

Still waiting here. So, my girls don't squat for me but they have started squatting for the rooster. Is that still a sign of getting ready to lay? I mean even my big girls who are already laying don't squat for me...

Love the egg stories and that fake egg story was a whoot!! As to the comments about flies, I have flies, lots of flies and only 3 girls. I keep everything as spotless as I can, but I have noticed with all the rain, came the flies, it has been dry for almost a week and I've noticed a decline in the flies so I think maybe it's a weather related phenom, but who knows. So, does hanging the vanilla help or make it worse? I've not heard that before. We've had monsoonal rain here all summer long, it's finally been dry for a while but I lost all my green beans and the rest of my garden is a disaster-- If I had to support me and my husband on garden goodies, we would surely starve this summer. Hoping that August is drier and we went from the 90s/100's down to the 60s and 70s. Weird stuff.

Day four of squatting and no egg. I put a make shift nest in our coop until DH makes the ones we planned and my EE's tore it apart. So I went to the store yesterday and bought a couple dishpan and will see if they will keep the bedding in these. Will keep you posted, but no egg yet.

Well, I waited long enough to see Ms Frack come out of the box.....got an egg from her! Hubby gets off early today so we may have egg sandwiches for our lunch....LOL. Everyday now is a waiting game to see what treasures my girls give me...got to love it. Called my hubby to let him know my exciting news...about seeing an egg laid right in front of me. He just laughs and reminds me it doesn't take much to keep me happy...actually, he said I was a low maintainence wife.......LOLOL He is not into the chicken thing but I'm going to win him over. Just wait till Sept when I have to go to OKLAhoma for a week and he gets to take care of the girls.... He will come around

Delight..........just hang in there.... I never did see mine do any squatting but I don't have a roo either. All of a sudden....there was an egg. They began coming last week and I new my RIR were older and one had gotten real friendly even getting up on the door of the coop as I sat there and eating out of my hand. So I've been checking the egg boxes about 3 times a day. Wednesday, I found an egg that was longer and narrower than the others and I'm thinking it was from my MamaBrahma..today I got to see her actually lay an egg right in front of me!

Also, yesterday, I found an egg that I think may have come from my wyndotte...she is also younger.. But I could tell it was a "first"egg. It was outside of the boxes and it was soft shelled. The inside was good but I could see a couple of brownish spots which from what I understand could be some tissue sluffing off of the canal before the shell was put on. Hope the next ones are better. Hope you get an egg soon because as you can tell with me....it just gets you even more excited!!

... and yes, I will hang in there. I have never been one to be patient, but I guess I have to in this case.

My 22 week old barred rock did the egg squat this morning. YAY! It took the bird long enough. She's acting like she is going to lay any day. She sings the egg song and is now squating.
