Its 3am ....couldn't sleep! Then this grape sized little egg kept drawing me over .SO I BROKE IT OPEN TO SEE IF ANYTHING HAD DEVELOPED INSIDE. I would have lost $$ because I would have bet there was nothing more than possibly some eggwhite. Took picts so you could see I WAS SO WRONG!!

And the shell itself was very strong...nothing strange there....but this was really small,,,,,,,,,,,,,

teaspoon beside this so you could see how small it was on the inside too
It really does have a yolk.....however small it was!!

Wow that is amazing!! I would have never imagined that , thank you for pictures!

I was going to see if I could blow this one but I"m inexperienced with that...lol The shell started cracking in several places...it was pretty strong! So I gave up and just opened it!

My dh had a lot of fun with me having fun with my little tiny egg. I was trying to get him to "look...look".... He just rolled his eyes and went in to watch tv! LOL

Hi everyone!

Computer had an awful virus, and I have been able to get it up and running again! Maybe Santa will bring me a new one! I have been getting by with fresh eggs from 3 new layers carrying the torch for the 25 various age pullets I have growing out. Of those three, a White Maran, a Speckled Sussex and an Austra White,, they aren't laying like gang busters, but due to the shorter days, I am sure it will increase as the days start getting longer. Hard to believe that as of December 21st, daylight starts gaining again, and by end of January, middle of February we should all start seeing egg production pick up.

Really exciting for me is that my first Swedish Flower Hen finally started laying. I am hoping that by spring to be up and running and trying to breed some of these beautiful birds.


Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and the hectic next few weeks aren't too stressful.

Hi!

I'm just getting started with chickens. Got my 8x8 coop built. Working on the 12x22 run, should have finished soon if weather lets up. Either cold and windy, or cold and raining.
I have chickens that were hatched out some time this spring. Not sure when. I got them from a friend at work. They had just started laying a few eggs a few weeks ago.
After the move last week, they haven't laid any eggs that I can find. They also don't seem to be using the nesting boxes, (shavings haven't been disturbed). I built the nesting boxes
12-14 inches off the floor. Do I need to set a rail in front to help them get inside? My boxes are 12" high in front tapered back to 8-9", and are 14" wide. My chickens are 4 new Hampshire,
4 red sexlinks, and 2 dominques. I also have 2 roosters,(I know that is probably 1 too many, but was part of the deal.)

Here's where we are at now Racer, in flower pot squatted for me Oct. 31 and then layed her 1st egg Nov. 3. Only gave me 8 eggs and quit

Liza squatted for me Nov 8th and gave me her 1st egg Nov 14th. Shes now given me eggs daily only missing 4 times to date.


Raven, who we were thinking was a roo, squatted for me 3 times today Hoping for olive green color!

Hi Gfiman... A move can make your girls a little uneasy... and as they are new layers they could be a little confused. Some people use decoys to teach their girls about were to lay. You may try that... dummy eggs or something like that. My girls boxes are a little big but almost 3 ft of the ground. They seem to have no issue with it. I have only had a few eggs laid on the ground. Good luck...

Debbie your girls look amazing. It is funny... I have a half EE that looks like your Raven... and I had named her Raven as well I may keep her... it is so hard. I have 16 hens and pullets. I have a friend who wants to get started into chickens. She wants a few older girls so I may give her a couple of my older girls and 2 of my pullets, So hard to let go... There are a few that I know can not let go...Since my Raven is half EE and half Andalusian.. I am not sure if her eggs will be blue or white.... This will be hard. But I have 16 girls right now.... If I give her 4 I will still have a dozen hens that could mean a LOT of eggs after solstice.... At least I have infected a new person and have successfully lured them into the chicken world

They are like tattoos! Once you get one..... LOL My girls are a new batch, The I have 5 more thet are getting close 31 weeks, 29 weeks, and 28 weeks.

Welcome to the thread! I would put a rail to help the girls learn at first to head to the nest boxes. I have 20 coming of age girls growing out, with only one of them laying. I set up nest boxes last week, and you should have seen her jumping to the bar, then into the nest box to practice. She inspected each and every box, with all her little groupies watching behind her. I also have two wooden dummy eggs in each one, just to get the idea across. I let my daughter paint them nice pastel colors because my husband kept bringing them into the house saying.."got another one" and I'd have to burst his bubble that they were the dummy eggs... HA!!!

Sometimes. with one rooster being dominant, the other will just sort of act like the wingman. Head roo will be the one to mate. Do watch for too much wear and tear on your girls though, or.. I know.... JUST GET MORE HENS!!! Bwwwaaahhhaaaaaha....

works for me.!
