There is a protein % calculator on Metzer's site. You can use that to figure out how to mix to get the right % of protein.

You are going to need some sort of source for trace minerals. If there is really good grazing and plenty of bugs for the hens, they might do OK. Otherwise, you are probably going to see your egg production drop off.

There are a lot of grain products in commercial feed that I consider to be little better than floor sweepings.

I consider corn to be good feed, but it is very high calorie. It'll make your birds fat if you don't limit the amount that you use.

I do get a lot of my stuff from the Whole Foods or other healthy grocery store. I started really technical and tried to calculate everything and gave up when I saw how they were reacting to the various combinations. Now I basically feed like a person. Their food changes every couple of days and has a huge variety. I make a big bucket of semi moist food and freeze it which they love on these really hot days. I mix the dry separate. Sometimes I cannot get an item in organic but I still do people food so I know it has at least a minimum of standards. Everyone is happy and healthy and my quail produces at least one egg a day. Without changes to her habitat she will give me an extra two or three a week. Not eating the homemade she gives me about four or five a week if that. Double check each item for toxicity. Some legumes are not good for them and some are ok but have to be sprouted or soaked. The big thing is just getting in the habit of grabbing the extra groceries and taking the time to prepare it. I don't mind too much though because the day I make it I don't have to eat lunch because I've been snacking on all the bird food. Mine smells like a really good fresh foods casserole and would probably taste like one too if I ever threw it in the oven.
