Any Rock Geeks?

We need to do that sometime soon. March is the Victor Valley Gem & Mineral show out there about 7 miles down the dirt on Stoddard Wells road. Called Tailgate. I go every year rain or shine.

I've never been.

Rainbow Basin has different types of rocks than Trona, but it is REALLY cool!!!! And the faults...and folds....oooohhh!!!!

You will have to join our car caravan that heads out to tailgate this year. We all meet at AV Town Hall. We bring a cooler, a grill, a large sack and good shoes.

Do you work in the industry? I work in contamination/remediation. Not exactly what people think of when they hear of folks studying rocks...but I am a water geek as well, so it is very fitting to my personality.

Two degrees in geology here and I work as a geotechnical engineer. Telling people they are going to build the Leaning Tower of Pisa is Oklahoma is NOT how I thought I'd end up while I was in school.

Sadly, most geology in my neck of the woods is oil and gas oriented.

A gal that I go to school with (grad school) is working on her MS in geology and works as forensic scientist. She LOVES it! Especially when she gets to look at soils, etc.

Yea, seems that areas are definitely focused in one area or another. Here is California water and geotech are the big areas. My MS thesis is in Water Resources, whereas, my day job is in contamination. I was surprised when I took the FG portion of the ASBOG exam and did well in the economical geology section! The Univ. I got my BS at didn't even offer such a course. My BS is in environmental geology and my MS (which will be done soon!!) will be in geology with an emphasis in hydrogeology.

I collect rocks. I get them everywhere I go. My son knows that wherever I go, I will bring him a rock. I have a garden that I keep my rocks in-it is right outside my front door. It gets bigger all the time. I live in lush central Fl and have more rocks and less "lush" than ANY of my neighbors. When we visit someplace or if I meet a friend somewhere, I will look for a rock and take it home.
I am beginning to think it is really just a sick compulsion. Is that geeky? Or just freaky?
