Any suggestions on breed or gender?

Feather sexing works for certain breeds, but not all. Are yours mixed breeds?

also, feather sexing is fine within the first 24 hours or so after hatch. At 5 days, they are not able to be feather sexed accurately.

cute chicks!

Thanks for your feedback 😊. We’re flying blind at the moment, but it’s been nice for our hen. We understand your advice about accuracy. Do you have any general impressions, or would it be just pointless speculation? And they are mixed breeds

I’d say too young at this point. Since they are mixed breeds, then they won’t reliably have any particular indicators that some breeds have at hatch (feather sexing, spot on head, etc).

FWIW, we hatched and sold mixed chicks from our flock. But, young teen child begged to keep 3. So, here we are about 3.5 weeks later after trying really hard to pick the female chicks at day 4 just before taking them to the auction .....and we for sure have 1 male, a possible second male (pretty sure around 99% it’s a male), and the third one seems like a female...is lacking certain traits of the other 2, but who’s the momma, who’s the papa (we have 2 roosters)? So it is a guessing game!

good luck!

Fair enough. Guess we’ll have to be patient 🤷‍♀️.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, we appreciate it. Good luck with your chicks!

I think barnyard mixes can be some of the prettiest hens in a flock.

Farmer's wisdom says that pullets have faster, and more uniform wing growth with primary and secondary feathers emerging at the same time- and cockerels have L shaped wings. This is accurate with only a few breeds- but it's fun to map the criteria to chicks overall and see how true across the board.

For my big batch of Marans chicks it was right for 7/10 chicks. So not super accurate but, again, fun to at least try!

Thanks for your feedback 😊. We have given it a go and had a guess ourselves, as you’ve suggested so time will tell how much ‘Farmer’s Wisdom’ we have! 😅
